About Verna
What makes me stand out is my over 30 yrs. of extensive real life experience of helping children here in the Las Vegas Community. I love to help them overcome their challenges in literacy development to set themselves up for future success!!! My qualifications include the following:
*30 yrs. in Clark County School District
*15 yrs. as a literacy coach
-trained teachers to improve their skills in this area
*Specially selected for CTT program (Certified Teacher Tutor) to help children with special needs
*10 yrs. as an after school tutor
-both online and traditional
*Was selected to train other teachers in a program to help them improve as teachers (Love and Logic)
I love seeing students grow in their confidence as their literacy skills develop. I love ensuring students will grow and learn with these essential skills. It is amazing to see them believe in themselves and their ability to master their environments. The gift of literacy is one of the greatest gifts a person can develop, I love being part of that process!
Starting at 12 yrs. old I began teaching with my Church and found I had a passion for it. Later I decided to go into it as a Career after graduating from High School.

I would set up a weekly day/time for the students to come over to my home. My preference is to have the student in a private tutoring session, although if necessary parents are welcome to sit in. I start out by evaluating where the student is currently so I know how to best assist them. I would like to establish a communication with the student's school teacher as well if possible. I will purchase materials and have them on hand, however if any extra materials are needed for at home use, the parent may reimburse me for those.
Every grade level between Kindergarten to Fifth Grade. I have some experience with High School students for test preparation. I have worked with students in regular classroom settings as well as those who have IEP's needing more specific and individualized attention.
I would urge them to find someone who has been successful in tutoring in the past and speak with them on the phone to see if they are comfortable with the teacher's personality and teaching style.
I recently worked with a First Grade student who was exhibiting negative behaviors in the classroom due to frustration and fear due to her difficulties with reading. As we worked together and her skills and confidence increased, she was more cooperative with her regular teacher. Her entire countenance was greatly improved as a result of her increased abilities. This truly warmed my heart and let me know I was making a difference.
