About Carol

I have more than 30 years of successful experience helping people with dyslexia. All our methods are Orton-Gillingham-based. For more information, see (concealed information) or the website for my new book, (concealed information)

Dyslexia is real and about one out of five people are on its spectrum. It causes great frustration and, humiliation. I love watching my students conquer it and begin to enjoy its gifts. When I was teaching in fourth-grade, my struggling readers were averaging 2 and 1/2 years growth in their reading scores. They gained confidence as their ability grew. I LOVE watching that happen.

I have been a teacher for many years. The reason I started specializing in reading was my own two children have dyslexia.  I knew I had not been given the tools to help them succeed, so I  went back to school to learn methods that would really work for them. We homeschooled a long as I  could afford to, but I  had to go back to teaching public school. I took my new methods with me and saw many more kids become better readers

I have a Masters of Science degree in Reading. I'm certified to teach K-8 in Arizona with a reading endorsement. I'm trained in several Orton-Gillingham methods including Barton Reading and Spelling, Slingerland, as well as LiPS. I've written and published two books on dyslexia and have a video series soon coming out on how to teach reading to struggling readers

First, I talk to parents and give a free 30- phone interview to see if I am the right kind of tutor for their struggler. Then, I  do an assessment with the students so I know exactly where they are with reading (and writing). I need to know their strengths and weaknesses. Then I design an instructional plan to focus on their needs. Usually I use an Orton-Gillingham approach depending on what the student can already do. I work with non-readers or people who know they could read better, more effectively. After I have established a plan with the family, I or one of my tutors will come to the location of your choice 2 or 3 times a week.

I have worked with all ages. Some of my students have had overlapping learning disabilities like ADHD or high-functioning autism. I f I tjink there is a possibility I can help, I  will give it a try.

Experience does matter. And anyone struggling with dyslexia should be taught with Orton-Gillingham methods. Research doesn't support any other type of instruction.

I have been working with a boy who was very resistant to working with me in the beginning. (They usually are. They hate reading because it is so hard for them.) This week I came in and he had a game already set up for us to play as we worked through pur lesson and he was reading long 3-syllable words. That was huge progress from the beginning.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
The methods I use require consistency, commitment, and time.  We will be "rewiring" the brain. But, if you are willing to make the effort, many people are able to become excellent readers
