About Matthew
Hi! I'm Matthew, and I've been teaching private piano lessons for over 10 years. I teach primarily classical and church music, and I specialize in teaching a healthy technique to all ages and levels, as well as the tools necessary for artistic expression at the piano.
I earned my M.M. in Classical Performance and my B.Mus. in Keyboard Performance. As of 2024 I received my teaching certification in the Taubman approach, a revolutionary study of movement which analyzes the components of a virtuoso technique
I believe in empowering each of my students and emphasizing their strengths so they can reach their full potential as independent musicians.
I love helping others love music. I went into piano because of the profound influence my teachers had on me, and the ability to do that for others is a wonderful privilege. Helping others get excited about music makes me enjoy it all the more.
I developed my passion for teaching piano because of the influence of my past teachers. Throughout my studies, I have had the privilege of working with various piano teachers that completely changed my perspective on life.
I would love to be able to empower each of my students as musicians and individuals so they can successively inspire others. The opportunity of being able to influence others in such a profound way is an exciting honor and privilege
I've taught with private lessons for the past ten years, both through my home studio in Greenville and through various premier music academies.
I currently study with Edna Golandsky, the leading authority of the Taubman approach to playing piano.
I earned my Bachelors in keyboard performance at Bob Jones University and my Master of Music in Classical Performance at Queens college.

When I work with a new student, my goal is to create a well rounded musician!
I place a heavy emphasis on technique, rhythm, and reading. In addition, I believe it's important to explore the creative aspect of music making, so we do some improvisation as well as listening activities. We work through several method books in order to grow reading abilities and do several hands-on activites to supplement what the student learns in the method books.
I have worked with students of all ages and levels! My students range from five year old beginners to college music majors and adult amateurs. Truly any age is a wonderful time to learn music.
Finding a teacher is a very special thing. Look for a teacher who cares about you not just as a musician, but as a person. Look for someone who is invested in you or your child's well-being and development. Look for a teacher who truly loves what they do.
A few weeks ago, I had the privelege of teaching intensive private lessons with a few kids. I met with one boy, a 6 year old beginner, for 15 lessons in three weeks. On our last lesson together, he looked at me with a big smile and loudly said "I really can't wait to practice!" That little sentence reminded me of why I was in music, to make others love it.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Ask yourself, "why am I taking piano?" Having goals makes the guiding process much easier if the teacher knows what the student wants to do with music. Also ask, "how much am I willing to commit to learning?" Piano is extremely rewarding, and gives as much as you put in. Be willing to practice!

Matt made piano lessons fun and engaging for my 7 year old daughter. He is patient and connects with his students. He use creative ways to teach for my daughter piano while making it fun. He's a great piano teacher.
