About Vivian

I'll always try my best to communicate what I do or don't know about a particular subject. If I'm stuck on something during a lesson, I'll work with the student so we can solve the problem together and gain something from the experience.

I love sharing what I know, and I particularly enjoy seeing other people's "aha" moments when I'm able to help them understand concepts. I also love learning, whether I'm learning specific concepts or (more generally) additional ways to more effectively communicate to or teach others.

The anecdote that I've shared (including on my LinkedIn) involves me reading through a fascinating science book as a child and then trying to teach everyone I met what "DNA" stands for, which would've been my first, "unofficial" foray into teaching. More officially, I got my start in high school, when the afterschool center I'd previously attended as an elementary-school and middle-school student hired me to serve as a teaching assistant.

Throughout high school, I worked as a teaching assistant (TA) at an afterschool center with groups of about 20 second-graders at a time, which entailed reviewing their homework assignments (and working with them to correct any mistakes made on those assignments) and, occasionally, teaching basic math or English concepts to them and helping them correct errors made on problem sets assigned to the students by the afterschool center.

In college, I held two different roles that involved working in-person with other college students. For eight quarters, I worked as a tutor for the UCSD Calculus Lab (run by the Department of Mathematics), conducting generally one-on-one tutoring (or occasionally small-group tutoring, with or without other tutors present) for students taking calculus courses. I also served as an instructional assistant (IA, a TA-like position) for the UCSD Division of Biological Sciences for seven quarters, and in that role I ran discussion sections for lower- and upper-division lecture courses or co-ran lab sessions for a lower-division lab course, along with hosting office hours and exam review sessions in order to help students better master course material.

After graduating from college, I worked as a private tutor in the San Diego area for about half a year, assisting two elementary school students, one high school student, and one college student during one-on-one, in-person tutoring sessions in various subjects (elementary-school reading and math, high-school geometry, and college chemistry and calculus). I also worked as a tutor for Chegg Tutors, which involved online one-on-one tutoring sessions for similar subjects, either through video or phone calls (live lessons) or written lessons.

When working with a new student, I'll generally start by gauging the student's comfort level with the topic at hand or with related topics, which allows me to determine how to begin answering the student's questions (whether regarding a specific, assigned problem or regarding a topic more generally).

I've worked with students of all ages, from elementary-school students to college-age ones.

It's important to find someone who's knowledgeable about a subject, but it's equally important to make sure that that individual is able to communicate what they know -- and, crucially, what they might not know -- to you. Throughout my experience tutoring others, I've been upfront about what I might not know, and when that has happened, I have worked together with students to ensure that we both learn from that experience (both about the concept/s at hand, as well as more general problem-solving strategies).

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
From a tutor's perspective, students should ideally have a sense of their preferred learning methods (e.g., visual, reading/writing, etc.) and, if possible, a list of specific topics that they may want to better understand -- these can help the tutor determine what topics to cover during a lesson and how.
