About Chiemi
I am a friendly and open-minded person whose passionate in helping students improve their abilities and skills while maintaining an understanding of music theory. My overall goal is to open people up to music in a relaxed environment, eventually creating strong and lasting relationships.
I have 25 years of teaching experience of all ages. I often teach younger students more advanced approaches of specifically Jazz and Latin. However, I also enjoy exposing adults to Jazz and Latin music by teaching them new skills and theory.
For children, I teach basic music theory and piano techniques using traditional books such as Hanon and Czerny; however, even though I introduce them to classical music at home, I can eventually teach my students how to enjoy Jazz and other popular music through playing, so they can one day perform in front of an audience.
Depending on your level of musical knowledge and theory, I can also teach adults more advance approaches such as Jazz theory and improvization, Latin montuno and so on.
I have a 60-year-old student who had stopped playing the piano for a decade; her fingers were weak and she found it difficult to memorize the chord names and progression of Jazz even though it was her interest. I have been working with her for 2 years.
At the very beginning, she could only play as she read charts/notes. She didn't know how to play chords which are essential for playing Jazz.
After the first year of working with her, she is now able to play songs with chord progressions and little-by-little she learned how to improvise the chords. Since then, she plays Jazz while reading chords without having to read any notes on the chart! She has improved a lot in those 2 years.
When I see the improvement of a student like her, I become so proud for both of us. In the end, never giving up is the key to learning and she showed me that :-)
