About Jan
Over 30 years of experience teaching adults, teens and children. Credentials include: SDSU, Bachelor's Degree in Music Education and Piano Pedagogy, Berkley College of Music Keyboard Specialist, New England Conservatory of Music Pedagogy with A. Ramon Rivera, and Nationally Certified Teacher of Piano with the NMTA. Current Board Member of the New England Piano Teachers Association. Experienced teacher with the ABRSM International Piano Examination Program.
I focus on each student's inner strengths whether it is learning by ear or visually. I don't believe in a "one method fits all" approach to learning. I create a completely individualized program for each student so that the student has every opportunity to become a well rounded musician. Whether it's learning jazz, classical or improvisation - the lessons are tailored to the individual student's interests.
After completing my degree in the 80's, I initially started teaching in local music studios and the public school system. I taught groups and private lessons. That expanded into offering private and group lessons in my own studio.

I like to interview the student and get to know what their interests and motivations are in learning piano. Plus, I like the potential student to feel comfortable with my approach. I have listed below some of the basic skills that are necessary to becoming a great pianist. If you are a beginning student, then we would start by working on these skills.
1. Being able to read music notation.
2. Recognizing and being able to execute simple rhythms.
3. Coordination between the hands and proper execution when hitting the keys.
4. Understanding some basic music terms and what they mean when playing the piano.
5. Being able to practice at home consistently and with purpose.
The better you become at these skills, the more complex your music can become and the more satisfied you will be with your progress and ability to express yourself. You can learn any genre you prefer at my studio. I teach pop, jazz, classical, latin and blues styles. Or if you want to learn how to improvise you can learn the basics of how to follow a lead sheet and comp with your left hand.
Adults, Teenagers, Children. All levels and abilities.
Find a teacher who you are comfortable working with. All teachers have different styles and methods. Interview the teacher and have the teacher give you a "mini" lesson. That way you will have a certain level of comfort before you start lessons.
I enjoy supporting all of the pedagogy opportunities with the New England Piano Teachers Association. The speakers are fantastic and always leave me inspired. This translates into creative and fun ideas of how to work with my students.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What styles of music do they want to learn. How much time will they be able to practice. Do they want a teacher that travels or do they want to come to a private studio. How much structure are they looking for. Do they want the teacher to provide all the materials for their lessons or do they have certain pieces or books they want to use.
