About Richard
We design lessons specifically for each individual from ages 5 to adult. Our goal is for you to learn as easily and quickly as possible ("presto"). We also specialize in instruction for exceptional student learners. We usually have 2 recitals per year where students can meet, perform, and socialize.
I teach music in elementary school and have taught piano courses at the college level. It's such a reward to see my students accomplishments, regardless if its for a casual skill, lifelong learning, or at a perfoming level.
I've actually been teaching instrumental lessons for about 25 years. I've shared with adults who wanted an enjoyable hobby ~ some children of parents who wanted to enrich their lives ~ some children who needed structure or focus in their life ~ some looking to learning a 2nd or 3rd instrument ~ some looking to be in a music or related career professionally. What is great is that many related elements are positively affected - self-esteem, success oriented and non-threatening experiences, motivation, relaxation, therapy, etc.
> 29 years elementary music teacher
> B.S. degree in Music; music therapist
> Accompanist, professional performer
> Former adjunct instructor at Miami-Dade College

Complimentary meeting - interview of previously learned skills, what type of learner he or she is; primary music focus - positive new skills, lifelong learner desire, attention deficit, etc. Reinforce that students be committed to a chosen time; with me, after 4 p.m. during the week or starting at 9 a.m. on Saturdays.
I've worked with 4 & 5 year olds, privately or in twos; elementary and middle school ages, high school age and older students including seniors, both privately or in group piano or guitar classes. Also, I've instructed students with exceptional needs who may require a therapeutic approach. If note reading is being implemented, music theory components are also stressed. Patience - practice - performance!
Remember to always trust your instincts! Meet the person you think could be a good fit for you or a family member - and discuss what your current goals are for your lessons. Either get a sample lesson or a long discussion about how lessons are given. What about these issues: can lessons include music that is not in a required book? are any opportunities given for learning music that is not notated, if desired? are the methods too strict or too lenient for the learner? Don't make a quick decision to stop lessons once you have started - give it a few months. Personalities and learning style need some time to intermingle.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should let the teacher know why lessons have been chosen (to perform, "hobby-enjoyment," increase music knowledge, etc.) Can the student's teacher be accepting of student input (acknowledge learning style, specific music choices, music notation vs. learning by rote or improvisation).
