About Kay

I am in love with the piano 🎹 When the children see that.. they want it too! It's almost magical 🧙‍♂️ And for some reason kids and I click ❤️ I just think that age is so sweet.. And I have as much fun as they do 🥳 Then, because I'm teaching these adorable children, their parents realize that I truly love 💕 and care for their sweet kids and want them desperately to love the piano as I do... it's so beautiful 🤩

The number one reason I enjoy my work is because it's not like work to me. I can honestly say I get great pleasure and satisfaction teaching these little ones. When I was teaching elementary music, at 8:00 in the morning, 35 third graders would walk into my room..... and they didn't have a clue as to what I was about to do. All they knew is that it would be fun. My motto is, "If your child doesn't have fun in music, there is something wrong with the teacher." There is so much about music that I love 💕. That's why I learned how to play so many instruments. In high grade and college, you could always find me in the band hall. I was chosen as BAND SWEETHEART my Junior year in high school and was drum major my Senior year. I was and still am so blessed 😇 to be able to play and teach this awesome 👏 instrument. So, I guess you could say that I enjoy EVERYTHING about my work😊

When someone knows at age 6 that they must learn the piano... the love affair has begun..   I knew one day I would be sharing my love for the piano with other children.  It was my destiny!  The minute I graduated from college, I started teaching elementary music plus private piano lessons.

I started lessons at age 6.  That Christmas 🎅 Santa brought me a piano!  So, in January, after the Christmas holidays, I started lessons with Ellen Cannon, who lived directly across from my elementary school 🏫  And she just happened to be one the National Guild teachers who had the reputation of being one of their best!  And because she was a Guild teacher, that meant that I would be a member of the Guild, and would be judged every year by one of the Guild judges.  You had to memorize several pieces and of course, your scales etc.  And the Guild judge, (every year you would have a different one who would fly in from somewhere in the United States) would pick out maybe 4 or 5 pieces to play plus scales.  Of course, you never knew which pieces he would pick, you just needed to be able to play them as perfectly as possible.  Point being, after 12 years of intense training, I graduated from the National Guild plus won the Paderewski Gold Medal.  Which means I scored 95 and above for all 12 years that I was judged.  Quite an honor.  Of course, when I was old enough to be in the band at my high school, I played clarinet, bass clarinet, bassoon and alto sax, plus I played the keyboard for the jazz band.  I ended up getting my Master's degree in Piano and Education from the University of North Texas.  I taught elementary music for several years (plus piano lessons as well)  I eventually retired from elementary music and just stuck with private lessons.  While teaching public school, I did win Outstanding Teacher of the Year.  Quite an honor as well. I was also a member of the Orff/Koday Association and traveled to their national conferences every year... Boston, Chicago, St. Paul, just to name a few. Their method of teaching was having all of the students, whether playing an instrument, or moving to the music or singing, leaving no one out, and the students were at all times engaged in the process of learning and enjoying the many facets of the joy of music.  Teaching piano is my passion.  It brings me great joy.

The first thing I do is have a meeting with the parents and student.  We discuss what I will be expecting from the student.  We go through the student's week, and I let them tell me what time of the day they will be practicing?  By letting them figure that out, it gives them the independence of practicing without being told.  Then I play something for them.  Something really good.  And I tell them that if they practice everyday..  in one ☝️ year, that's what they will be able to play.  And they want that really badly. This works every time to get them to understand how important it is to practice everyday.
