About Stephen
Two words: Key Concepts.
After completing all of the required coursework for medical school and studying for the MCAT, I have identified all of the most important, key concepts of science. The reason I call them "key concepts" is because understanding these concepts is CRUCIAL to understanding the rest of science, which builds on them.
If these concepts aren't understood, learning science will feel like rote memorization and be nearly impossible. But, if these concepts are understood, then students will feel like they hardly have to memorize anything at all. All of the other concepts will fall into place and make sense.
Learning the key concepts is worth however much time it takes, because learning everything else is quick and easy once the key concepts are understood. When this occurs, learning becomes very fun and exciting. The only thing I love more than having concepts click for myself is seeing them click for other people. That is my goal!
I love studying science for the feeling of "Ohhhh, wow!" that comes when concepts "click" and make sense. That's what makes learning fun! But, unfortunately, this doesn't happen for all students as often as it should.
For me, the only feeling better than the "ohhh, wow!" feeling I get when things make sense is seeing my students get that same feeling. I feel more accomplished helping others understand things than I do when I understand things myself. This is always my goal, and what I love so much about my work!
I first started teaching when I lived in Valle del Cauca, Colombia. I taught lessons about Jesus Christ to families over 40 hours a week for 2 years. I also taught English and Spanish classes for a few hours a week during those two years. Then, when I came to college at BYU, I began teaching lots of fellow students in my classes. In my three years as a Biophysics major at BYU, I've spent a few hours a week tutoring friends one-on-one and leading study groups.
I am a Pre-Medicine undergraduate student in the Biophysics program with a Chemistry Minor. I have completed the Pre-Medicine coursework with a 3.9 GPA (3.92 Science GPA). I recently took the MCAT, and am awaiting my score.
For Spanish and English tutoring, I lived in Colombia for two years and spent hours a week teaching both languages.

First, I seek to build a relationship with them and assess their understanding of the concept I will be teaching. Then, as I begin teaching, I explain the key concepts first. I draw out concepts as much as possible, and use clear analogies whenever applicable. I stop every few minutes to assess the student's comprehension as we go.
