About Dustin
Hi, my name is Dustin Tracy. I am a twenty nine year old PhD candidate at the
University of Florida. I've earned my bachelors degree in both physics and
accounting, and completed my master's in physics. Throughout the later half of
my undergraduate I spent a significant amount of time tutoring students in STEM topics
including Calculus, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, and of course
physics. I also had a few MCAT clients. While in graduate school I've led
discussion sessions and held office hours for both calculus and algebra-based
physics one and physics two.
I like to view a the tutoring profession very similarly to the coaching
profession. When I work with students, I patiently guide them through the
thinking processes until they are capable of working through to the solution.
Just like a coach prefers a game won on good play over a lucky win, I value the
reasoning of the student more than I value their final answer, and will spend a
large amount of focus on it. I teaching methods focused on critical thinking of
rote memorization best prepares the student for learning new material later in
life, a skill that is increasingly becoming more important. For abstract topics
I often use my background in computational quantum chemistry to make some sort
of visual simulation to help the student achieve a more material grasp of the
topic.
Just like the most complicated computer programs are nothing more than a large
string of 1's and 0's, by starting with the most basic ideas and merging these
ideas in very sensible ways, the solutions to many seemingly complicated
problems can become intuitive.
I started tutoring at my undergraduate's tutoring center as a way to have the school pay me to help my friends learn physics. I enjoyed tutoring so much that I continued until my fellowship prevented me.
I began tutoring college physics 1 and 2 with and without calculus in the fall of 2012 at my universities tutoring center. I graduated with a bachelors in physics in the spring of 2013. I then worked as a teaching assistant for the laboratory for physics 2 for two years as I finished my masters. I continued through the next 2 years of my Ph.D. career on fellowship. Over this last year, I began teaching again. I'm currently teaching the discussion sessions for the algebra-based physics one course here at the University of Florida.

We'll first go over their expectations of accomplishment as well as look at their textbook and syllabus. We will then spend a bit of time discussing their previous knowledge of the topic and its prerequisites, a step that is really important in designing a lesson plan. Once I have a clear understanding of our starting point, I'll then discuss with the student how often they would want to meet and for how long. We'll then decide on a curriculum.
I've worked primarily with college students and a few students who were dual-enrolled. The majors of these students varied dramatically including business students in business calculus, engineers in differential equations, and pre-medical students in physics.
You should look for a tutor who understands the equations rather than just knowing how to manipulate them. By focusing on understanding the concepts, you'll be prepaired to solve a much larger variety of problems than you would by soley applying equations to practice problems.
The Albuquerque balloon festival was marvelous. The quantity and diversity of balloons is a sight to behold.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Make sure you are honest with your tutor in your comfort with the prerequisites for physics. For physics, it is often a good idea to front load the course with a review of trigonometry and calculus. Never be afraid or embarrased to say that you don't understand. Your teacher is there for you and should gladly recover a topic again if you aren't following.
