About Wes
Wes Carson is a fine art/documentary photographer and academic. Carson is a former assistant to renown photographer, Irving Penn and commercial photographer. His expertise includes analogue and digital photography, studio lighting, as well as the history of photography. Wes Carson has taught photography to students of all ages for the past 13 years.

I enjoy working with people who share a passion for photography just as I do. It is extremely rewarding to see a student achieve their creative goals.
In 2003 after a successful commercial career, I decided to transition to fine art photography and pursue a Master’s degree. Part of this was to satisfy the eternal student within myself but a large part was a passion to share my knowledge and experience with people that want to learn the history and craft of this amazing medium of photography. I had the opportunity in graduate school to teach a few introductory courses and I quickly became addicted to teaching. I have been doing this full time ever since.
I have over 25 years in the photography industry as a commercial photographer, fine art photographer, and educator.
i earned my Bachelor’s degree in Advertising and Illustration Photography from the Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, California in 1991.
I earned my MFA in Art with a concentration in Photography from the Universoty of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida in 2006

The majority of my educational work has been at the universoty level where I have mentored undergraduate and graduate students but I have worked with a diverse group of students in terms of age and educational level. I routinely work with middle school and high school students engaging with photography as an after school activity as well as working adults that are interested in a hobby or career change.
Look for a teacher/mentor that is interested in how photography fits in your life. You want a teacher that will craft a curriculum to meet your specific goals. You also want a teacher that will teach you how to use photography as a means of artistic expression as well as how to operate equipment.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What are your immediate objectives with photography? It could be as simple as leading to use your camera in the beginning but you also want to consider how you might use photography in the futire.
What type of a time commitment to practice outside of our instruction time fits comfortably in your life? Learning the art and craft of photography is a collaborative effort between the mentor and student.
