About Mia
I am a senior college student at UMSL studying math and philosophy. I have been tutoring since high school for elementary students in a variety of subjects and continue to tutor students today. I also work at The Nine Network of Public Media as a Ready to Learn facilitator working with kids. I love teaching and forming relationships with my students. I am flexible with time and am happy to zoom or facetime as well as answer quick questions anytime via email.
I love getting to know students and seeing that moment when the concept clicks and they understand. I know that both math and writing can be stressful and intimidating subjects for students, and hope to make it understandable and share my passion with them.
I started teaching because I have many family members who are teachers and have a passion for education.
I have been a teachers assistant and tutor throughout high school, worker as a camp counselor and teachers assistant at The Saint Michael's School of Clayton, and tutored for various students throughout college. I also currently work at The Nine Network of Public Media as a Ready to Learn facilitator. This involves leading educational sessions with students of all ages, creating new content and curriculum, and training new facilitators.

First I like to get to know them and try to help them know me and feel comfortable and respected. I like to help get them organized with their assignments and help them form good organizational and study habits to stay on track. When approaching specific assignments or questions I like to ask them alternative questions to help them figure it out themselves. Using an active, hands on approach as much as possible is important to me because I want my students to be engaged and really learn and remember the content. Full disclosure, Mia is my daughter. This school year she has been tutoring our other daughter (Mia's younger sister by 7 years). To be blunt, I'm not sure how we would have survived the months of remote schooling without Mia's patient, consistent and thorough help. She works through the material in an orderly and understandable manner, keeps weekly calendars for work due each day/week and generally keeps everything on track. We've seen a remarkable improvement and we're on track for the best semester so far.
