About Jacob

I've been teaching math for over twenty years now, and my experience gives me the skills I need to explain math to pretty much any student. I love my work and I'm very patient. I have a masters degree in math from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and I've taught at schools from San Pedro to Glendale (Kansas City too). I received a distinguished teaching award from El Camino College a couple years ago, so it's not just me that thinks I know what I'm doing. Let me know if you'd like to work with me.

I like working with students, it's just a fun process. Math is an intimidating struggle for so many people, but it really doesn't have to be that way. The best part of my job is when students start to see that they can grow and be accomplished, to believe in themselves.

Tutoring wasn't quite my first job (I worked at a restaurant briefly), but it was definitely the first job I thought I would want to do for more than a few weeks. While working as a tutor, I finished my education and the school I was tutoring at offered me a job as soon as I was qualified (actually a few months before that). I get a lot of joy out of working with students, which is part of why I'm so good at what I do.

I have a masters degree in mathematics and a bachelors degree in secondary education. In addition, I've been explaining math to students for over twenty years (ten as a college instructor).

The very first thing is to figure out where a student is at. I ask some questions about what a student is currently working on in their class and how that is going. I also ask about a student's engagement and how much they're interested in investing in the process. The limiting factors to what a student can achieve definitely include time and money, so it's best to assess how much of both are available from the jump to best tailor my approach to what will work for a student. Once I have a sense of what I'm working with I can jump in.

I've worked with about every type of English-speaking student, which includes English language learners. I've worked with elementary school students, high school students and college students. I've worked with students with limited math skills and students in technical programs. I've worked with students with developmental and physical disabilities. I've worked with students from diverse ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds, and I've enjoyed working with all of them.

Don't bother hiring a tutor you don't communicate well with, you won't get much out of it. Bear in mind that the tutor is working for you, and ask questions about what we have to offer. Use a first tutoring session as an assessment period to see if a tutor will be providing quality instruction before you commit to any kind of schedule.

A student I taught last summer came by my office a few weeks ago to tell me about their progress and what they were doing next. They are pursuing a career with the sheriff's office and they were excited to tell me they had passed their fitness test. We talked about their recent visit to Argentina, it was a nice visit.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Nothing is more important than being honest about what you want in a class and what you're willing to invest into it. Think about your available time in particular. We can offer you all manner of additional assignments, but if you only have one hour a week to put into a class, there's no point taking on more than one hour worth of work. Once you have a sense of what you have available, you can ask your tutors about how to direct your efforts. Again, being realistic about your goals is extremely helpful. Passing a class may require a very different type of engagement than getting an A and both depend on how important the class is to you as a student.

I'd prefer to do online tutoring at the moment, but in person tutoring is a possibility. I do charge more if I have to travel. Zoom is my preferred platform, but I'm open to others as needed. My standard rate is $40/hour for individual appointments, reduced rates for block scheduling can be negotiated.
