About Jonathan
For me, I like to have a strong sense of communication between me and my students. Having clear communication allows the tutor to figure out the best way to help the student. It also allows the student to express their concerns and confusions from a lesson in class or a particular question.
Right now, mathematics is often seen as an annoying subject that students either get or don't get. For me, I see mathematics differently. Mathematics is all about connecting the dots and seeing the logic in the world around us through numbers. Any time I can help a student view math in a different light I feel great because mathematics is something that should be loved, not feared.
While I was at Salisbury University, I was contacted by a professor looking for people to tutor a local high schooler. At the time money sounded nice, so I responded back and spent the good part of five months visiting the student weekly and helping them with Algebra 2/Business Math. Tutoring at Salisbury University was also a great experience as often times a professor can make things more complicated than a subject needs to be.
While I was attending Salisbury University, I spent two years as a secondary education - math major. While I didn't finish out my final year doing the internship, I did take most of the classes required. In these classes we learned how to help students learn tough subjects, specifically areas in math that students struggle with. While I was at SU, I also worked as a tutor at the college, helping students with introductory math classes, and also as a private tutor.

When first starting out with a new student, I like to get to know a bit about them. I'll usually find out what they like to do in school, favorite subjects or hobbies, that sort of thing. From there, I try to figure out what their strengths and weaknesses are in mathematics. Often times when you're moving through grades, students might miss important pieces that have a huge play later on. A quick refresher on those sorts of things can help a lot to understanding the current topics they're struggling with.
Throughout my time at SU, I worked with 8th graders, 5th graders, 10th graders, and freshman/sophomore college students.
In my opinion, finding a tutor that actually wants you to succeed is one of the most important parts getting help. A tutor needs to be patient, understanding, and knowledgeable about the subject they're teaching. Communication is key and a tutor should be able to walk a student through a problem in multiple ways to help them see the big picture. And if a tutor isn't working out, you shouldn't stay with them just because you have so far.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Whenever a student is struggling with a subject or lesson, it's important to ask why. Understanding your weaknesses and limitations in a subject is the first step in trying to correct them. I've interacted with a number of students who will just tell me "I just don't get it" and the first thing I try to figure out is why. Did they miss some core lesson in the past that is hurting them now or are they having issues with arithmetic? Often times students' problems end up being basic things like going too fast or forgetting vital steps. So asking why you're having trouble is a big step in improving your performance and it makes the tutor's job a load easier.

Typically I try to work with whoever is contacting me. I'd say for a base pay, I look for about $30 an hour but this can be negotiated depending on many factors. For example, if the student were to come to my location, then travel expenses wouldn't be a factor and I would consider something like $25 instead.
