About Lea
I have a huge passion for teaching and tutoring. I am a current Junior at GVSU, studying Nursing. I plan to pursue higher degrees after my BSN and I eventually will become a professor of Nursing at the university level. I love school and have such a passion for learning, succeeding, and, most importantly, help others along on their academic journies as well.
I have unofficially tutored for 8 years now, starting with volunteering through my school and surrounding elementary and middle schools, tutoring subjects ranging from reading to Pre-algebra to AP and ACT Prep courses. I have tutored officially through Grand Valley for 2 years, in predominately collegiate science subjects including Anatomy and Physiology Part I and II, Introductory Chemistry, Introductory Biology, Organic and Biochemistry, and all of the labs that accompany those courses.
Through tutoring, I like to start sessions making an outline for the session and recapping what was gone over the previous session. I like to make goals for the session and strongly incorporate student or parent goals, as well. I believe in the teach-back method, where a student demonstrates their understanding of a topic to me which shows me where their understanding and retention level is so we can assess and strengthen areas that need a little more help. At the end of the session, I always incorporate practice problems so the student can see where they are at with the content and also so they are prepared for academic testing on the subject.
I enjoy helping students love to learn. Learning is a lifelong process no matter what your career may be, so learning to love education and learning itself is a huge basis for life. Helping students gain confidence and belief in themselves to succeed and grow is amazing. Helping students achieve both of these goals is so rewarding and it is why I love to do what I do.
