About Marissa
I have tutored as a TA for math classes and have worked as a Math Tutor for Glendale Community College. There is a wide range of math I'm capable of helping others to learn, from basic Algebra to Calculus 3 and Differential Equations.
I enjoy tutoring math tremendously; it gives me an opportunity to really help students understand mathematical concepts. Having been employed as a tutor for a Community College, I have seen the frustrations of students as well as hearing how hated math is. To help people with that; to take a step further in their education for a greater purpose, is very rewarding to me. Tutoring also allows me to continuously build a stronger foundation for my own understanding - it's a win-win.
I started by helping many of my peers with understanding math prior to applying to and working as a tutor at the community college.
My professional experience as a math tutor and TA at Glendale Community College for 3 years has allowed me to help various students of all walks of life, understand mathematical concepts.
I've also excelled in many math courses throughout my education towards an engineering degree.

If the student is enrolled in a course, I try to work through step-by-step, problems very similar to the assigned curriculum they've been assigned. I will stress the critical points needed and leave them with any written work/printed material I bring for them to practice.
If the student has yet to start a course and is trying to prepare for an upcoming course, I find online material (or draft it myself) that helps students run through syllabus based concepts, per given class.
Ages 7-65; I've tutored previous client's kids, high school students, college students, family, neighbors, etc.
If you prefer someone to teach you how-to's, real time: Find someone who is willing to show you, really work to help you understand the concepts and not stick to only one means of solving an equation. I'd like the opportunity to troubleshoot your understanding of math. As an engineering student myself, I'd really like to help you figure out what you need to know to succeed in your class.
If you are a prefer to fly solo:
1) Syllabus - What "listed" concepts (ie Factoring Polynomials, Gradients, etc.) are listed in the syllabus.
If a syllabus is not provided...
2) Internet - a simple google search or peak at Khanacademy.org of concepts listed in the syllabus [or in this case, for those with out syllabus search for: (Insert Class here) concepts for (insert class name here)].
Recently a neighbor of mine asked if I could tutor their son with Algebra; his class was covering factoring poynomials. Throughout the tutoring session, there were many phrases like "Ohhhh, I see"; to hear the relief a lot of students have when they get a concept is very rewarding. In my experience, math is widely disliked for its difficulty as well as finding its purpose in people's lives asides from a degree requirement. My goal is to convey the many applications math has while helping students reach their own goals.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Ask self:
What given (or written by you) notes do I have?
Where in the steps do I lose understanding of what's going on/concept at step?
Ideas of what I believe I need from a teacher/tutor to help me succeed?

Perfect! I just had a phone interview with Marissa and I am very impressed with her tutoring experience listed on her profile, as well as our conversation about our son and his needs. Marissa was very friendly, willing to accommodate our schedule, expressed a willingness to help our son over come some learning obstacles, she explained very well her ability to teach using a step by step process for learning math formulations and communicating this information with our son creating a positive learning experience. After speaking with her on the phone I felt like she was a good fit for our son and we are starting with tutoring next week! We are super excited to have her!

Marissa was very patient and kind with me (a 35 year old nontraditional college student). Her price was fair and I liked to pay for the month in advance. I was so happy when I met her and she came to my house on the days I was available. When I did my homework I would mark the problems in red that I struggled with and we focused on those in our session. She showed me more than one way to solve a math problem and was very encouraging and suggested I just chose which way felt more comfortable for me. She tutored me through my Basic Algebra class, and 2 College Math Algebra classes. I made one B and to A's.
Marissa is very reasonably priced and has even stayed longer if needed.
Today, Marissa tutors my 9 year old son and 10 year old daughter in math and beginner piano lessons. She is very flexible and even offered to do a Skype session with my daughter when she had to leave out town for an emergency.View more recommendations
