About Aidan
I serve to tutor in methods that are different from the standard curriculum taught at most U.S. institutions. Often times students learn material within their local schools without having been taught the fundamentals as to why information looks the way it does. For example, why is it that 5^0 is equal to 1? Such a simple thing seems to have slipped the explanation by common teachers within the United States. This was made evident to me when I asked some UT students why this was, and they weren't able to explain it until I told them. I am not here to completely regurgitate the teachings of other high schools and below teachers. Although I may often present material that is standard in the US curriculum, I hope to offer plenty of alternatives in order to combat challenging problems to students who struggle with the conventional standards of teaching. In terms of qualifications, I hope to provide peer-level teaching seeing as I am currently enrolled as a freshman at the University of Texas at Austin. I graduated as valedictorian in a class of roughly 790 students back in Keller, Texas at Timber Creek High School. I also worked as a tutor for two years prior to graduating from high school at a tutoring center near my hometown. I never put much focus on the SAT and was only ever able to take it one time, but I received a 780 on the math section back during my junior year in high school in 2019. Unfortunately, COVID-19 hit during the Spring of 2020 so I never was able to take another test and had no incentive to as colleges no longer cared about the SAT. That is not to say, however, that I don't understand the SAT math section, as preparing students for that was often requested of me by peers at my high school, and by students at the tutoring center that I worked for.
I aspire to teach students in many different ways than standard U.S. schools do. We can all admit that a uniform structure of the learning is never going to be adequate enough to meet the needs of each and every student. All students learn at different paces and have different needs that ought to be met. By offering multiple alternatives to solving problems that I have discovered for myself, and for other students I have taught, I hope to distinguish myself from the standard forms of education.
My interest in teaching grew during my junior year of high school when I decided to go out and find a tutoring job. I had always helped people in my school, so I figured I would enjoy tutoring at the local Mathnasium that was near my house.
I am a student at the University of Texas at Austin, and I am currently enrolled in upper-level calculus classes at the university (calculus 2/3). For two years prior to moving into Austin, I worked at a Mathnasium location in Fort Worth. In these years, I taught anything from basic addition to precalculus. Although I am not certified in teaching (as a current undergraduate student), I was valedictorian at my high school (Timber Creek High School) for the class of 2021, and have consequently garnered months of experience with helping other students academically.

In order to assess a student's individual needs for a tutoring session, I advise that they come prepared beforehand on a certain topic. This enables me to better select materials that I may use to teach them with. I also advise methods of assessment and testing, as these are the best forms for providing data on what the student might need help on. As of right now, I would prefer to help a student with current issues they are experiencing in school and ensuring that they are doing well on their homework. Typically issues prevalent in their school grades, although not very indicative of intelligence, can help one to assess what they need to improve upon. Once I can find out the cracks in the foundation for a student, I can help to solidify their knowledge and move on from there.
I have worked with all sorts of students. Mathnasium tutors at the center I was employed worked a maximum of 12 hours a week but were often faced with teaching 4 kids for every hour they worked. I have worked with students of varying strengths. That is, however, not to say students with varying intelligence, as I understand that all students are capable of improving upon their ability to consume new information. I've worked with students who wrote their numbers backward, students who have had intense attentive issues, and most pertinent to the tutoring profession, students who have no desire to learn math. In all of these experiences, nothing but positive outcomes were expressed after a few hour-long sessions. For me, I have always had struggles paying attention in the classroom, and I frequently find myself dozing off during lectures. I understand the issues faced by many teenagers who do not like the manner in which school structures the teaching of mathematics. Having become valedictorian at my school, I discovered for myself, with the help of methods not taught by schools, that there are ways to learn the material more efficiently. By providing students with these methods, I have always hoped to improve their ability to learn. The goal is not to memorize knowledge and mathematical processes, it's to understand them fundamentally and to learn how to apply these fundamentals to real-life situations.
You're going to have to experiment with different teachers and methods of teaching in order to assess what you need. Every student has their own needs, and not every teacher is going to be for you. This was my experience at Mathnasium. Some students preferred being taught by myself because I get straight to the point, and don't prefer small talk. Other students liked teachers that would connect more personally with the students, at the cost of learning materials. Neither method is for everyone, because every person has their individual needs. Some people need a more personal connection with their tutor in order to begin to like mathematics, and some people just need someone to present them with the knowledge right then and there. Please don't take this as me saying that I am never willing to connect with a student on a personal level, I just prefer to keep the session focused on mathematics; however, if assistance is ever needed on school life, I will provide it :-)
To clarify, find a teacher that matches you. Whether you need someone who talks all throughout the session or someone who is silent as you are working, just find someone that suits your needs. For me, I have always been the more quiet type when I work, so I prefer getting the material and then having the ability to complete problems uninterrupted. However, when I teach, I often speak frequently and consistently while explaining a problem at multiple levels. I will often go through multiple methods of solving a problem before claiming there is a "correct" way to solve things, just in case a student prefers one method over the others.
I am extremely fond of discovering the implications of mathematics within my current field of study, chemistry. Seeing as I am also extremely interested in economics, and have always been since high school, discovering calculus within collegiate level classes was a thrill for me. It's always fun to get to a level of information that becomes useful to your career, and within the field of mathematics, calculus applies to A LOT of STEM fields.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What grade are you in?
What level of math are you learning?
What subjects within this level of math are you struggling with?
Do you have problems with test-taking, the material itself, or prerequisite knowledge?
Do you struggle to pay attention in class?
Do you want to excel in math past your grade level, or achieve an understanding of your current level?
Do you struggle with the current method being employed to solve the problem?
What are your interests and how do you think math might apply to them?
Ask me and I might be able to provide you with an answer!
