About Cailin
My name is Cailin Frankland and I am a passionate educator well versed in many subjects! I can teach elementary, middle school, and high school-level mathematics, sciences, social studies, history, government, English, and French, as well as college-level psychology, neuroscience, and public health. I specialize in helping students build strong essay-writing and analytical skills in both STEM and humanities subjects as well as standardized and Advanced Placement test preparation.
I am a Brown University graduate with a BSc in Neuroscience and four years of teaching experience with elementary school students in Providence, RI. I am currently pursuing a Master of Science degree in Neuropsychiatric Epidemiology at Harvard University's TH Chan School of Public Health. I have personally taken the following standardized tests and received scores well above the 90th perscentile: SAT, SAT subject tests, AP subject tests, GED, SSAT, and ISEE.

I love learning, and I hope after spending time with my students that they grow to feel the same way! I want my students to get passionate about the subjects I teach them and feel a sense of accompishment in achieving their goals, no matter how big or small those goals may be. To me, education should be about growth and discovery as well as more tangible milestones like grades and test scores. Learning shouldn't be a chore and every second of education is an opportunity to develop new skills.
I worked as an academic after-school mentor and summer camp counselor at D'Abate Elementary School in Providence, RI for four years while I was a student at Brown Unversity. I also have tutored my middle school, high school, and college peers in various subjects when they needed extra help, so I'm comfortable with all ages and most subjects.
I also have experience working with the disability community and heping students access academic accomodations, so I welcome neurodiverse and otherwise disabled students to work with me. I do not charge extra for students who need accomodations and am happy to help them and their families navigate the process of accessing accomodations free of charge.

I like to sit my students down and talk about goals first so that we're on the same page about what they want to get out of learning with me. Based on that, we build a schedule together of times to meet and work for them to do in between our sessions. At the beginning of each session, we do a "check in" and a "check out": we "check in" a positive thing in our outside lives to bring into the workspace, and we "check out" a source of stress or sadness that would otherwise distract our learning. At end of each session, I like to take a few minutes for "free talk": we talk about whatever the student wants and give them an opportunity to give me feedback about their learning experience. I believe that learning is collaborative and that tutors need to acknowledge the whole person we're teaching, not just their existence as a student of a subject.
I have worked with students ranging from ages 5 to 20 at varying levels of education. I have the most experience working with low-income families and am very understanding of extenuating circumstances that may affect students' learning and performance; as a trained Peer Mental Health Advocate I have experience with helping students navigate trauma, mental illness, and disability in and outside of the classroom. My main goal is always to help my students build the confidence and skills they need to achieve their goals.
Look for a tutor who cares about you as a person, not just as a student! If you're struggling with a subject, it's always best to find someone who will empathize with your situation and work with you to find solutions instead of just another person to grade your homework. Compassion is key!
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Ask yourself:
- What are my goals? What is currently holding me back from reaching them? How can a tutor help?
- What does my tutor need to know about me to help me properly? Are there any things that make me so stressed or upset that they affect my work? What kind of treatment would motivate me?
- How long is my attention span? How often do I need breaks? Is it easier for me to work with my tutor during sessions or in-between sessions through homework?
- In a fantasy world, what would I want to get out of my tutoring experience?

Details
My pricing is negotiable and need-based, so I will never charge a family more than they can reasonably afford. That being said, my typical rates are:
$20-35/hr for elementary/middle school students
$30-45/hr for high school/college students
$40-55/hr for exam/standardised test prep or college essay/application help
These rates also depend on subject and the amount of prep time necessary for me outside of our sessions.
