First, getting to know them. Understand what they are looking for in a tutor and their expectations from being tutored. If they're in school, do they want to master textbook material, homework, essays, tests? Are they looking to take an alternative approach to learning? We would craft a plan that uses either or both tracks. I can decide what's best with or for the student.
At the same time, start establishing a rapport. Learn about the student as a person, not just a client. This is a critical step in facilitating learning. I don't serve as a buddy, but strive for a relationship built on respect, trust and an occasional joke!
And perhaps the most important step to supercharge the learning process is confidence building. This is not to say everything is great when that's not the reality, but there's almost always at least a glimmer of understanding or desire to understand that can be amplified.
