About Zachary

I have an in-depth but fresh perspective of history. As a history major in college at Shippensburg University and now my master's through Southern New Hampshire University, I provide a well rounded view of historical events and trends. I am currently a 7th grade social studies (Modern World History) teacher in Maryland but I also completed student teaching in high school as well. Further, although I and my tutoring service are young, I am in tune with the changing methodology in the history field to best suit your needs in interpreting the past. If you are in need of research, that is, where to find sources and the best means of doing so I am very adept at directing students to the most reliable sources for the information they are looking for.

Writing is something else I take great pride in. It has been my main focus through my career in higher education. I enjoy peer reviewing papers to encourage the best possible writing practices. I specifically look for grammar errors and, about historical events, whether the paper flows well together.

Other quick facts about myself is that in my spare time I do Civil War Reenacting to further engross myself in history. And, just because it's quite enjoyable. I was also in Phi Alpha Theta in college, the history honors society. I was the host for the annual History Day Competition for my school this past year where hundreds of students presented their research projects they completed over a four month period.

I enjoy working with young people and giving them perspective on the wider world. Having in-depth discussions with students on controversial topics so that all sides may be at the very least understood is vital for academic growth and community involvment. Also, talking about history with people makes for really fun conversation.

I realized I wanted to be a teacher in high school. I love educating people about the wider world and showing them perspective. Especially on topics not normally talked about in class. After college I was so eager to start my career for the upcoming fall that I applied to seven states (including my home state of Pennsylvania) for teaching positions until I finally had an offer in Maryland which is where I am currently employed.

I was a history peer tutor in my undergraduate assisting mostly first year students with papers and history exams. Papers usually revolved around analyzing the prompt through different perspectives and finding the underlying themes. Also, I helped students in understanding primary sources for assistance in writing papers.

Typically I would ask what the student is most comfortable with in terms of communication. Phone, email, or video. All of which I am fine with. Once that is decided the student and I will discuss a schedule for discussion tutoring convenient for them. I am very flexible in terms of what days work best for students. There is a lot going on so ensuring convenience and consistency is important for success. Depending on the nature of the tutoring schedules can differ. For example, a student who simply needs a short paper reviewed may on need to meet with with me once where as someone studying for a major exam might need to meet with me several times.

Throughout my undergraduate program I observed over 80 hours in various classroom settings. I worked with students with disabilities for 15 of those hours. I observed high school and middle school classrooms which taught a wide array of subjects from government to ancient world history.

Make sure to read the teachers background and see above all if they are personable. If you think you would enjoy talking to your tutor with ease then you are on the right track. Many people can tutor, but the connection between the student and tutor makes the learning all the more valuable.

A recent event I am fond of was going to the 2019 New York City Comic-Con with my now fiance. In my spare time not reenacting or completing master work, I enjoy playing video games and watching movies. They are type of escape to entertainment when I want to shift away from the sometimes, dark tone of a historical event I am reading about.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should ask questions that are not just about the topic they are being tutored for. For example, ask teachers questions about issues surrounding your topic or subject. Information given from your teacher might just help bolster your background knowledge for a test or text on a paper.
