About Jonathan
With a degree in both History and Theatre Arts from Dickinson College and years of professional tutoring expereince and social justice work, I use creative, collaborative approaches to exceeding student goals that recognize the often silent, structural challenges that students face in the American education system.
I believe in utilizing creative, student-specific strategies in test prep and content revision that best reflect the needs and talents of each individual client.
Learning large amounts of information and analytic strategies is difficult, but I believe each student has their own unique skill sets that can be harnessed to tackle any academic challenge.
I have worked as a feelance tutor in social studies, history, and acting for four years and my clients have consistently outperformed their expectations in class and on standardized tests.
I have also worked professionally for three years as a writing tutor at the Norman E. Eberly Writing Center. I assisted college students, high school students, and international political figures at the U.S. Army War College in developing useful stategies to overcome pitfalls in their writing process. I have assisted clients in drafting and polishing various pieces of academic and professional writing in all subjects including: college admissions essays, high school essays, undergraduate research papers, graduate-level research papers, undergraduate theses, cover letters, and company memos. I am trained to assist clients at any stage in their writing process whether they are at the final editing phase or have just started brainstorming.

My first session with a student is often centered on garnering a sense of their comfort with the material and a survey of their preferred methods of instruction.
I lead with "What has worked for you in the past and what types of assignments/material are you least comfortable with?"
From here, I like to set a list of goals with my student and a tentative schedule of progress.
Then we jump right into the material or assignment. Our first session might involve me asking many questions, but this is only to learn a bit about the student's learning preferences and strengths so that I might better plan for the future.
From here, I can draft an outline for the rest of our progress. At the second session, I will have prepared a flexible plan for tackling the rest of the material that will adjust as I continue to learn from my student what works best for them and what study methods they enjoy.
Ultimately, my approach rarely involves a brush-stroke method of reviewing material. Instead, I prefer to learn from the student as we progress so that we can develop tailored life-long study and work techniques that they can use outside of our sessions.
