About Patricia

I stand out because I am closer to the students age and can gain rapport easily whilst also teaching and helping to recall in many different ways. I have been known to create new assignments for the same information for just one student or creating stencils for students who struggle with learning disabilities to help focus on one question at a time.

I am a current college student at Sam Houston State University working on my major in History. And I have experience tutoring one on one or in small group at Waller High School for the past two years.

I really enjoy helping students succeed in their academics and growing their interest in different historical events into fruition.

I love History and the fact that there is always more to learn. I will often take trips just to see more pieces of history for myself. The pictures in my profile are from the previous summer in Washington DC where I spent four days at the Smithsonian Museums.

I had a lot of teachers when I was in school who made a big impact on my life and I wanted to grow up and make positive impacts on other kids lives. I wanted to be that teacher who always had snacks and answered every question and came up with new ways to impart knowledge.

I am a college student majoring in History and minoring in Secondary Education with past experience tutoring. For the past two years I was a STAAR tutor helping in classrooms for a high school. I would work with students either one on one or in small groups every day.

Usually when I work with a new student I try to build rapport and make sure the student feels heard and that I care that they succeed. I usually ask if they have any interests inside or outside of school and see if I can create metaphors or modify assignments towards those interests to better the students understanding. I also make sure the student knows they can ask any question (pertaining to the class) and we can always talk about events on a deeper level if needed. Sometimes I give the student a formative assessment verbally to see where they are at in their learning.

I have worked with mostly high school students. Mostly sophomores but I have worked with all grade levels before in some capacity.

My advice would be to look for someone who has a lot of passion for History. I know it can be boring but those who really like it will find a way to make events in History pop in your mind!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Some questions you might want to think about before (and discuss with your tutor) are:

1. Do I learn better by listening, reading/seeing, writing things down/drawing or active discussion?
2. What has a teacher done in the past that made recalling information easier?
3. Do I want to just know the basics to pass the test or do I want a deeper understanding of the event?
