The most important step would to have a conversation with the parent(s) to hear exactly what they would like to accomplish with/for their child -
What subject(s) are they interested in? Would they prefer tutoring to be in person, on the phone or over the internet? How frequently and for how long would they want the sessions to be?
From that conversation, we would be able to come up with a game plan for me to help their son or daughter.
For over 20 years, I have worked with students/families from all socio-economic backgrounds.
The most important consideration is your comfort level with the prospective instructor/tutor. It is absolutely vital that you and your parents feel comfortable with and have an excellent rapport with him or her.
This past summer, when the country began to come out of the stringent "lock-down" status due to COVID-19, I was contacted by nearly a dozen former students who wanted to meet for lunch and/or dinner. Out of all the people that they could have chosen to meet up with, I was thrilled that several wanted to get together with me...
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
How will the tutor adjust his or her instruction when a student continues to be confused by topics? Your instructor MUST be able to find multiple ways to "get the point across" because students understand topics/concepts in different ways and at different speeds - there is no "one size fits all" when it comes to effective teaching/instruction.

Mr. Erickson is a very personable teacher. He takes the time to get to know his students and connect with them outside of the classroom. In class, I found Mr. Erickson to be particularly helpful because of his understanding and explanation of economics. He doesn’t move too quickly and makes sure his students are on the same page before moving on to the next subject. It was a pleasure to be taught by Mr. Erickson and we are still in touch.
Mr. E is the full package. As a teacher in freshman history and AP Econ he is able to engage the whole class and make sure each student is heard and involved. More importantly he will dedicate countless hours of his time after class hours to meet with students to go over concepts or their writing. Additionally as an advisor and coach he is top tier.
Mr. Erickson knew how to keep us focused on the topic. Everything we did was enjoyable while also being super helpful, in regards to learning the subject matter. Not only was he very good at teaching, he was an amazing person!
