About Amy
Write Start is the only handwriting-only tutoring service in the Cincinnati area. Sessions are taught by a Certified Learning Without Tears Specialist. Sessions are offered for children starting in Preschool through Middle School. Students will learn pre-writing, printing, and cursive skills. Sessions are 1-3 students and are 45 minutes long, once a week. Light practice homework (5-10 minutes/day) will be assigned each week. I have worked as an Occupational Therapist with older adults for 18 years. Seeking a change, I turned to handwriting. There is a growing need for young people to develop stronger handwriting skills, as they do not get enough practice in school. Handwriting helps the learning process by stimulating brain function, and helping with retaining facts. Legible handwriting can also help boost a student's confidence and academic performance. When a student isn't worried about HOW to write, they can focus on WHAT to write.
I have a background in Occupational Therapy. I am also certified as a Learning Without Tears ™ Specialist.

The first step is an evaluation. The student's school worksheets, math papers, and journals are reviewed. The student is also given a formal assessment. After the assessment is scored, a plan and goals are created by the instructor and sent to the parent(s). Parents that wish to continue with lessons will be given the option of signing up for single sessions, or packages of 5 or 10. Sessions are held in West Chester or Blue Ash, Ohio and last 45 minutes. Sessions can be with 1-3 students, grouped with similar needs. An informal assessment will be done at 5 sessions, and the more formal assessment will be repeated at 10 sessions.
My clients have ranged from preschool through 7th grade.
Better handwriting habits don't happen overnight. It does take practice. My goal is to make those lessons a bit more fun and take away some of the stress of writing.
For children who are older, such as middle schoolers, I recommend really giving good focus to the lessons. After years of building "bad" habits in handwriting, it takes time to change. Be patient with yourself.
A recent student started showing improvement in only a few sessions. He seemed more confident and seemed proud of his success.

Details
Initial evaluation is $100, which includes face-to-face time with the student, as well as scoring and goal/plan creating outside of the session.
Packages are available in 5 or 10. 5 sessions are $240 and 10 sessions are $490. After that, additional sessions are $49 each.
Single sessions without a package are $59 each.
In addition, a one-time workbook/paper fee of $29 will be added to the initial package invoice.
