About Cullen
A versatile musician, you'll find Cullen on stages throughout Southern California. Based in San Diego, Cullen Blain is dedicated to helping students of all ages discover their musical ability. His main instruments are bassoon and double bass and he teaches bassoon, double bass and electric bass, guitar, and music theory (musicianship), offering lessons that blend a solid technical foundation with creativity and personal expression.
From the classical stage, in the studio, a jazz lounge, or beach bars- you'll find him performing somewhere. His professional work includes performances with West Bay Opera, Dayton Philharmonic, Cincinnati Chamber Opera, Springfield Symphony, Queen City Opera, and the Kentucky Symphony, among others. He has also performed under renowned conductors such as Keith Lockhart and Paavo Järvi, and alongside artists including The Who, The Four Tops, and jazz legend Lew Soloff.
He holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts (DMA) and a Master of Music in Bassoon Performance from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, as well as a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Central Connecticut State University. His principal teachers include William Winstead, Martin James, Brian Kershner, and Donald Bravo.
As an educator, Cullen is passionate about building confidence, creativity, and musicianship so students can focus on what matters most: making music. He has taught everything from PK–8th grade general music to private lessons and ensemble coaching, and currently serves as a program manager supporting school music programs across Southern California.
Whether you are a beginner picking up an instrument for the first time or an advanced player refining your craft, Cullen offers lessons tailored to your goals, helping every student achieve their sound in creating their musical story.
I've taught music from Pre-K through high school and at the college level, and I currently help teaching-artists improve their skills. I received my DMA and MM in Bassoon Performance from the University of Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) and my BA in Music from Central Connecticut State University (CCSU). My primary bassoon instructors were William Winstead, Martin James, Donald Bravo, and Brian Kershner. I've performed under conductors like Keith Lockhart and Paavo Järvi, and have been on stage with bands like The Who and the Four Tops, and with jazz legend Lew Soloff. I continue to perform with professional and regional orchestras, teach bassoon, and make reeds for bassoonists worldwide.

My goal is to help students discover how rewarding playing music can be and to cultivate a natural talent and musical ability into a potential career path or engaging life-long hobby. Regardless of starting point, my goal is to prepare students for performing at the highest level they can achieve!
You need a teacher who is actively performing and teaching, is supportive, can understand your abilities, break down the technical parts of playing, and help you grow as a musician and artist.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
A few questions I'd recommend students ask themselves: Do I want to play just for fun, or do I have specific goals like joining a band or performing in a recital? Do I learn better by watching, listening, or doing things myself? How much time can I practice each day or week? What kind of experience does the teacher have? How does the teacher explain things and give feedback? When are the lessons, and do the times work for me?

Perfect! Cullen is a very clear, warm and knowledgeable teacher of Garage Band, the program I am currently learning to use. He answered my questions and presented more very important information for me to know about that is essential to getting the professional sounding recording I am after. He is a good listener, sticks to the subject and answers all my questions quickly and clearly. I look forward to our next lesson.

I offer competitive lesson rates and flexible scheduling to fit busy family lives. I provide reeds, study materials, etude books, sheet music, and reed tools. You can pay per lesson or monthly, and missed lessons can be rolled over to future sessions.
