About Jules

My teaching approach: I've been playing and writing songs since 1971. I have a B.A. with a Minor in Music from Millersville University of Pennsylvania. We will lay a strong musical foundation with structured lessons including, but not limited to: playing fundamentals, music/fretboard theory, ear training, as well as positive practice habits. My goal is to provide the student with the foundational tools that will enable them to learn and figure out favorite songs on their own, play with other musicians and even write their own songs. I also teach ukulele, voice and beginning piano. My influences are: Joni Mitchell, Janis Ian, The Beatles, Simon & Garfunkle, Peter, Paul & Mary, The Mamas & The Papas, Jim Croce, Fleetwood Mac, Johnny Cash... too many to list. My guitar lessons take place in: The teacher's studio or the student's home. Guitar lessons typically take place on these days and hours: M – SAT: 10 am – 8 pm PT Guitar Techniques: Rhythm guitar, Reading Music, Music Theory, Scales and Exercises, Song Writing, Guidance In Equipment Selection Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following: We begin with learning the parts of the instrument, from there we go step by step. Students will learn music theory as they learn to play the instrument. With a complete beginner, it will usually take from 4 - 6 lessons before it can be determined whether they can grasp mentally as well as physically the instrument. It takes time in the very beginning for their coordination to develop, and the concept of theory to begin to gel. A guitar lesson with me might entail the following: 1st 1/2 of lesson, I'll ask the student to show me their progress since the last lesson w/ whatever homework they were given. Trouble spots will be worked out & corrected at that point. Then, if the student has progressed satisfactorily, I'll introduce new material I explain each new step we take as it pertains to the big picture as well as the task at hand. My method develops a musician as opposed to someone who can play chords and some songs. The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following: Burning passion to learn and play their instrument is awesome, but even someone who has a great interest in learning to play. Ability to pay attention, willingness to practice, ideally every day, and then play their instrument every day as well. Someone who understands professional or even good amateur playing ability does not happen overnight. Someone who wants more than just to play chords.

Music is amazing, and the more you learn about it, and the more music you can make, the more amazing it becomes. Helping people of all ages and sizes tap into the magic of music is thrilling to me. There can never be enough music in the world, so each time I help make a musician, I feel as if I've helped make the planet a better place.

I'm a natural teacher, finding myself always helping others in whatever area I was learning or working. I've taught massage (including all the science classes) at a trade college, as well as business, and English composition in the legal department.

I did a lot of performing as a solo act and with various bands/duos as side-gigs and ended up picking up students on the side here and there.

In 2010, I had to shut down my main business because I began taking care of my mom who had dementia. I took about a year off in order to acclimate her to my home, and then realized I needed to do something to earn an income, and also to keep my own mind intact.

I was hired by a local music school part-time. I was there about 5 1/2 years until I relocated to North Idaho after my mom passed. In that time, I grew my student roster to the largest of all the teachers. I also had the longest student retention record. I taught piano, guitar, bass, ukulele, mandolin, banjo, voice, harmonica, drums, wind instruments, strings, and voice.

I was raised by a gifted musician, and from high school through to college was active in the elite choirs. Though I am primarily self-taught, I do have a minor in music from Millersville University. I've been playing and learning instruments for decades.

The first six weeks are where I learn how my student learns and adapt our learning process to them. There are different methods I use as we go along where I can determine the best way to teach a particular student. I caution parents and older students alike that it takes about 6 weeks before things really begin to click. After that 6 weeks, if I feel I am not the right instructor, or the student should explore other interests, I will make that known.

I've had students from 3 years to nearly 80. I've worked with artistic kids and adults, and also more STEM-like kids and adults. What's so beautiful about music is that it appeals to both right and left-brained people. A teacher just has to know how to appeal individually to each student's strengths. I have worked with special needs students in the past, but I no longer do as it is not my area of expertise. Shy, gregarious, and everywhere in-between—I've worked with them.

Make sure you and the teacher are on the same page. Some teachers are happy to teach the student what they want to learn in the order and way they want to learn. In my personal experience, that's not helpful to the student in the long run. Some teachers, like myself, like to help grow musicians. We, the professionals, teach the students in a way that will help them understand what they're doing.

There's always that "Aha!" moment with my students when many things I've been telling them comes together and they "get it" as I promised they would. It's quite exciting for both of us.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What is your purpose for learning to play? Do you just want to learn to play songs, or do you want to become a musician? Becoming a musician means learning how music is organized, the theory of it (what I like to call "Music Facts.") Are you willing to practice on a regular basis?
