About David
Hello!
I teach guitar and ukulele (as well as bass, piano, songwriting and music theory) in Berkshire County in the southwest corner of Massachusetts. In addition to my private students, I also teach group classes at the Berkshire Community College at its Great Barrington campus.
Since 1999, I have been Managing Editor and Senior Writer for the highly praised, free online tutorial site, Guitar Noise ((concealed information) where my lessons have been read by over two million people from more than a 160 countries across the world. I also frequently contribute to Acoustic Guitar Magazine.
Additionally, I am the author of Idiot’s Guides: Guitar Theory (Alpha Books, November, 2014), Idiot’s Guides: Playing Guitar (Alpha Books, September, 2013), The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Playing the Ukulele (Alpha Books, July, 2012),The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Guitar (Alpha Books, October, 2010), The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Playing Rock Guitar (Alpha Books, March, 2010), and The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Playing Bass Guitar (Alpha Books, September, 2006). I also co-authored The Complete Idiot’s Guide to the Art of Songwriting (Alpha Books, August, 2011), along with Grammy nominated Nashville writer, Casey Kelly.
Typically, I teach at my home studio. My rates are:
30 minute lessons are $30
45 minute lessons are $45
Hour-long lessons are $60
I will come to your home (within Southern Berkshire County) for an additional $5 or $10 fee (depending on distance). I can also arrange to have lessons at the Berkshire Community College (located at 343 Main Street)in Great Barrington.
Making music, simply put, is magical. To be able to help other people find time in their lives for it is not only magical, but thrilling as well.
A lot of my students , present and past, play as a regular part of their lives. Some are in bands, some play in social groups. Some perform for others at coffee houses and small gigs. It's exhilirating to watch and catch up with them all.

First, we'd sit and discuss what your goals are and then work out a lesson plan to best meet those goals.
A lot of my teaching involves finding out what your strengths are and then using those strengths as a starting point to gradually improve your technique.
The ultimate goal is not just to get you to where you want to be, but to be a partner in your learning process so you can continue to grow as a guitarist (or whatever instrument you're working on).

David is an amazing teacher. In fact - he could teach just about anything! He is in "tune" with what you are trying to learn, and for me has helped me learn classical, blues, folk - as well as any type of song I want. He works with your strengths, is patient, and really helps you improve.
My experience with David has been very good. What has worked for me (thinking that each student /teacher dynamic will be different, as people learn in different ways) is going into each session with no agenda other than my questions and curiosity. The result can be described as more guitar/music theory than just guitar. I have been learning the "how and why" of melody, harmony, chord shapes, neck positions, dynamics, playing with others, etc. David's solid understanding of music theory allows him to teach his students how to successfully play guitar, and other instruments.
David is non-judgmental and warm. He was able to meet me where I was and to create lessons that worked with my learning style. He is patient, good humored, and big hearted! I recommend him to everyone I know who's curious about guitar (or any of the other instruments he teaches). Highly recommend!
David is very knowledgeable and helps you get what you want out of your musical journey, be it building your skills on the instrument, accompanying yourself or others, understanding theory, etc. Makes the music fun and as challenging as you want.
I've taken 3 sessions with David. When I first started I was brand new to guitar playing. I find the lessons informative and like how we build on top of the basic chords each week.
David is an amazing, gifted teacher. He appreciates and teaches great varieties of music. A more rare quality: he appreciates and understand his students' widely varying ways of learning and teaches to his students' individual needs. David makes everything fun -- and he's talented at making the learning ingrained. He is wonderful with beginners and equally valuable to established musicians. Anyone who has an opportunity to learn with David Hodge should jump on it!
David is an accomplished musician and a very experienced and dedicated teacher. He is versatile and accommodating in his approach, bringing players of different abilities along at a comfortable pace. He mixes theory and practice encouraging students with patience, humor and example. Love of music and a sense of fun inform his sessions.
He determines which is the most practical way of solving a problem and thoroughly helps you implement the solution. His analytical ability and understanding of guitar focused impediments are unparalleled and his wiliness to be helpful, supportive and encouraging are major assets in the learning process.
David is an excellent adult guitar teacher (can't speak to his kid ability because I don't know... but I am sure that he is great there too!). He has just the right amount of support and push that makes it easy to keep working. He is easy to understand when explaining things. I highly recommend him!
David is an amazing, masterful teacher with years of experience working with all levels of students. He really knows how to explain things, and welcomes questions so he can find just the way to help you understand. I’ve taken various classes and also had private lessons for the past 5 years.
David is a musician's musician, and a most helpful teacher. Whether uke, guitar, banjo, or music theory; he has guided me for over six years. If you are looking for assistance in advancing your musical knowledge and skills his lessons are truly worth your attention
I have been taking lessons from David both private and group for many years. He is extremely talented and has the passion to teach. He provides hands on skills and a vast amount of materials to take home to re-enforce your learning
David meets each of his students (myself included) wherever you or I happen to be and helps us explore options for next steps forward. He brings a lifetime of stringed-instrument experience to his teaching and can be serious or playful in his approach, as needed.
If you want to learn to play, or to play better, David's a teacher you don't want to miss. Get on board now! You'll be glad you did.David is very approachable. He makes even inexperienced students feel at ease while sharing his musical knowledge. He makes learning fun!
