About Joshua
Guitar teacher with extensive teaching and performing experience is available for lessons at my home in Beacon. I have been playing guitar for over 20 years, and teaching for over 10. I have played all styles professionally at one time or another, and teach jazz, rock, blues, country and some classical.
My primary teachers as a young student were in New York with Joe Monk and Howard Morgen, and I incorporate their approaches into my teaching. I also have extensively studied the styles of Joe Diorio, Howard Roberts, Chet Atkins, Lenny Breau, Joe Pass, and all the classic Rock and Blues players.
Lessons begin with basic, physical playing skills to develop a functional foundation; chords, strumming and fingerpicking techniques, basic blues and rock improv while applying those skills to the essential rock, blues and pop repertoire.
At the next level, we systematically learn music theory as it applies to the neck of the guitar; arpeggios, modes, advanced scales and soloing, "jazz" chords and inversions, walking bass, chord melodies, etc. Again, we will focus on expanding your repertoire as we incorporate these techniques.
If you are as serious about learning as I am about teaching, you will get results fast, at whatever pace you can handle. My students have ranged from 7 to 70, and my only requirement for young students is that they can read at the first grade level.
