About Kelsey

I love to help students discover their own passion when it comes to playing the French Horn! I love showing students that they are very capable of success and feeling confidence in themselves to grow!

I have been giving lessons for about nine years now for the horn students of Sullivan High School in Sullivan, MO, starting when I was a senior in high school! I have enjoyed working with each of my students, and I am honored to say that they have all grown in their path towards music! For example, one of my students was selected for the Missouri All-State Honorable Mention Band for her junior and senior years of high school! Regardless of achievement, however, I always take pride in my students' growth and hard work.

When it comes to accomplishments, I was selected as a 4-year Missouri All-State Band member, in addition to being selected for the East Central District Band for 4 years. I also had the tremendous opportunity to be selected to play in the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra from 2015-2019! We played many concerts in Powell Hall on Grand Boulevard and had the pleasure of working with the horn players of the St. Louis Symphony, where I learned several wonderful teaching and playing techniques! I also was selected as the principal horn player of the 2022 Missouri All-Collegiate Orchestra, where we performed at MMEA.

I have enjoyed performing for many years and will continue to perform for those who request a horn player, but I enjoy teaching lessons to anyone wanting to learn the horn! I am accepting of everyone and will do my utmost to make sure my students are comfortable and eager to learn!

I started teaching at my own high school! There were students who wanted to switch to horn when they were in middle school, so I offered to provide lessons to them at no cost to see if they would enjoy the switch, which they did! I continued to help students switch to horn in middle school as the years passed, while also continuing to provide lessons to those wanting to continue learning more!

When it comes to education and training, I am currently working towards my Bachelor’s Degree in Music Performance with emphasis in French Horn at the University of Central Missouri. I also have taken lessons from several renowned horn players around the state! I take everything I have learned from these instructors, and apply them to my practicing as well as when I give my students lessons.

My typical process for working with a new student begins with a few ice-breakers and listening to some horn music together for the first lesson! Showcasing the amazing qualities of the french horn while getting to know each other always helps establish some common ground so that nobody feels as nervous! When working on music the student needs to have prepared, or repertoire they are wanting to learn, I have them play what they have practiced so far-either by themselves or I will play along with them if they are too nervous! I then will establish what portions seem to need the most work and write out detailed instructions for gradually improving said portions. I will always take it at a slow pace when it comes to working on repertoire, as it allows me to see the rate of progress in each student.

I have worked with students from ages twelve to eighteen, however, I am willing to work with students at any age!

Advice that I would give in this circumstance would be to look for a teacher that provides a safe and welcoming environment! If a student takes lessons from someone who is not welcoming and nurturing, I personally believe that this student will not enjoy lessons and will eventually not want to further pursue music. It is so important to make sure students are comfortable and enjoying what they are learning!

When it comes to a standard pricing system, I will work with whoever will be issued the payment! Typically, I will charge $50-$60 per hour lesson and $40 for 45 minute lessons(hour lessons are discounted). I do consider mileage if I am to travel for in-person lessons, so I would make some adjustments according to distance needed to travel, but I will always offer lessons over Zoom for the prices listed above! If for any reason the prices are too expensive but someone is having trouble finding an instructor, I will be happy to discuss pricing to where I can still provide lessons!
