About Madison
Hello! My name is Madison Chenay and I have had the joy of playing the flute since 2015. I am currently studying music education at Brigham Young University, ID with an emphasis on flute studies. I have participated in middle school and high school bands (including marching band) as a member and also as a teacher/leader. I have also been a drill instructor for a group of flutists in 2020 and was an All-State Flautist in 2021. I currently perform as the Principal flute in the BYU Idaho Symphony Band and second flute/piccolo in the orchestra. I can provide the best experience for young flutists because I was not too long ago in their shoes and understand the fundamentals and building blocks of music.
My favorite part of teaching is when the student recognizes that they have grown as a musician from their hard work and dedication to their craft. Music is an opportunity to develop new ways of thinking and to foster creativity through musical expression.
My teaching began as volunteer work in High School. I was the flute section leader for my band in 2020 and was a drill instructor for the marching band season. Often, I would work with those in my section with marching and region music to improve musical endurance and skill.
Through musical leadership and observing my band directors, I realized I had a burning passion to both perform and teach music. I pursued music education at BYU Idaho as a 4 year degree and plan to graduate this December and move to the Provo, Utah area to grow my flute studio!
One unique aspect of my teaching is that I have been through the incredible music education programs in Texas through Fort Bend ISD and not long ago was in the students' shoes. I participated in marching band for all four years of high school and have competed in the Texas All-Region competition from eighth grade to my senior year of high school.
Since graduating from Dulles High School in 2021, I have had the opportunity to teach flute sectionals for Dulles High School and summer beginner flute classes for ALIEF ISD. I have also had the privilege of performing in the Brigham Young University of Idaho Symphony Band as the Principal flute and Symphony Orchestra as the principal flutist as well as a Concerto Soloist for the Idaho Falls Symphony in 2022.

When working with a new students, I start off by getting to know them better. It is important to build this bond between student and teacher. It is vital that the student feels excited to learn the material and understand that I am there for them during the learning process.
After this connection is built, I analyze the student's current level of skill and experience. From that point, we will set long and short-term goals in order to provide the maximum amount of musical growth.
In the past, I have worked with both Middle School and High School students in Fort Bend ISD and ALIEF ISD. (Near Sugar Land, TX). I offer my services to beginners through advanced musicians. At the college level, I have led flute sectionals and had the wonderful opportunity to lead the BYU Idaho flute section on the Symphonic Soundscapes Tour as well as in the Symphony Orchestra.
From being a music student myself, the right teacher is of utmost importance for your success. The most important thing to me as a music student is having teachers who are both friendly and professional in their demeanor and dependable for all my musical needs. My motto is that music is a gift for everyone! Everyone has endless potential to be musician and create beautiful art if they are willing to have an open mind in their studies and trust the musical process.
Recently I had the opportunity to teach for ALIEF ISD as a Summer Beginner Band Flute instructor. This has been one of my favorite teaching opportunities so far, as I was able to connect with the students about music and provide useful resources and materials for them. I loved to watch the variety of students that came through the room every day and admired how excited they were to be a part of something as a group.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I would ask students to reflect on what their values and goals are in taking lessons. As long as they are willing to learn I am happy to teach! (I am learning too!) Learning a new instrument can be difficult but yields a far greater reward as the student progresses in their abilities and confidence as an artist.
