When working with a new student, I think it's most important to get to know them beyond academic ability. I get to know their personality, interests, strengths, and challenges in their learning. This will help guide my tutoring sessions and find ways to connect academic concepts and build on the child's strengths. I often move on to modeling and guided-practice.
