About Christine
Trained in helping students K-12 strengthen literacy and composition skills, essay writing and critical thinking skills across humanities subjects (English, History, Philosophy, etc.). My style emphasizes individualized teaching that targets each student's precise strengths and weaknesses, as well as building a positive, trusting rapport during sessions.
Passionate about building students' strengths in foundational skills needed for success into college and beyond.
My relevant experience includes:
Tutored K-12 school children in reading and spelling skills at a well- known and reputable private reading processes school (2 year experience). Helped students with learning disabilities such as dyslexia and ADHD become capable readers and writers!
I'm also a mother of a 7 year old with intimate experience of teaching phonics and elementary spelling - my son had extreme difficulty learning initial letter-sound correspondences but is now an excellent above-grade level reader.
Guided students from kindergarten- 4th grade with homework in all subjects during afterschool programs (2 years). Encouraged accuracy, care and pride in good work.
Taught elementary essay writing and critical thinking at 6th and 7th grade levels in 1-to-1 and small group sessions (6 months).
Assisting high school students in conceiving and polishing authentic and persuasive personal essays for college. (2 years experience)
Worked as an academic proofreader and editor up to Master's level writing. Highly supportive and warm relationships with my clients. (5 years experience)
MA in English Literature from University of Chicago.
MA in Communication Disorders (Speech Language Pathology) from Cal State LA

Acquire a detailed understanding about parent's goals and student's abilities/difficulties. Gain a solid understanding of the student's educational history.
Build a warm and energetic rapport with the student.
Observe the student's process and performance on a series of sample tasks. Take note of what kind of assistance the student most responds to (modeling, visual cueing, questioning, etc.). Consider what skills need to be enhanced in order for the student to reach independence and mastery at a given task. Then draft a framework to reach mastery (with appropriate materials and resources). Discuss this framework with the parents.
