About James

I'm not interested in teaching my students what to think; I'm here to teach them how to think—how to read and comprehend, how to critically analyze, and how to make connections both in the literature and to their real life. Then I will help them to articulate these ideas, so that by learning to write them down clearly and coherently they will develop the skills to manifest through precise language exactly what they want from their world.

I am a professional writer with published works in commercial, creative, and political fields. I have been mentoring students in various professional capacities since college, and have since gratuated from Brigham Young University with a Bachelor of Science in Sociology—though not an English degree, I made a practice during my education of taking advanced persuasive, creative, and academic writing courses, and excelled on all accounts. The goal was always to write and teach professionally; I studied Sociology as a means to better understand people and how they relate to each other, which in turn has made me an even better writer.

I was tutoring classmates as early as high school. I went on to mentor elementary-age students while in college, and have worked as a teaching assistant, tutor, counselor, and mentor in many other professional capacities since.

The first hurdle of any teacher is to understand the student's learning style. This is a process of intuition as well as asking the right questions.

When tutoring for reading, I start by testing basic comprehension: can you read a passage, and then explain the most important idea(s) the author is conveying? Depending on the student's ability to understand and explain, I can ask questions to either coax more out or perhaps approach the ideas from different angles. This is the process of determining a student's ability to critically analyze. From there a more customized tutoring experience can develop.

When tutoring for writing, I start by examining a student's most recent writing samples, and discussing openly with the student areas of strength and areas in need of improvement. Then the process is similar to that of reading, because all writing begins with reading comprehension and critical analysis.

Learning compatability is key when selecting a tutor. Anyone with the internet can shove facts and material at you. A good tutor can listen, respond, and adapt in real time to a student's needs. Your tutoring experience should provide the advantage of customizable learning over the broader classroom experience.
