About Troy
I am a college student at Drexel University, with 2 published short writing pieces. Given that I am still in college, my knowledge on college application essays, college essays, highschool essays and even AP essays are all very recent and fresh. With this in mind, as well as a desire to help with English of all grade levels, it makes me very knowledgeable about current trends or desires in these areas. I'm also currently studying Early Childhood Education, with a job at a local private school.
I geniunly enjoy the English language, in regards to writing and diction. I have completed many AP and college level english courses, with multiple pieces at Drexel being considered for publication. Two of my short works, both sensory writing pieces, were chosen and published in a literary anthology at Drexel. To me, the feeling of writing and learning more about the language is exciting and even if those I tutor are not interested in that, I am interested in helping them in any way I can.
I started "teaching" at my local YMCA as a swim instructor. There I taught children and teens of all ages many different aspects of not only swimming, but water survival. From there my love of teaching blossomed and I began reaching out to family and friends who needed help on English assignments, one of my many passions. During the COVID pandemic, and knowing many students are in high stress mode, I decided to move online to offer my assistance to help any student in need.
I have worked as a swim instructor for toddler to adult age ranges, a co-instructor of elementary and middle school bands and I have taken a course on the basics of teaching. I have also taken a wide range of non-AP, AP and college level English courses, with the college ones being at Drexel University. I have constantly reviewed college application essays and general english essays for both high school and college students alike. Two of my short writing pieces have also been published by Drexel University, along with a few others that had been considered for publication.

When working with a new student, the most important thing to understand is why the student came to you. When I taught as a swim instructor, yes everyone came to me to learn how to swim. However, some students came to learn to swim for fun, others to conquer their fear of the water and others to learn to survive in case of an emergency. Knowing what a student is looking for can help handcraft a perfect lesson for them.
I have worked with all kinds of students across all spectrums. I have worked with students who are very comfortable with what is being taught and should be considered advanced, but I have also worked with students who needed more personalized approaches and lessons to flourish. Specifically towards my English tutoring, I have worked mainly with high school and college students, with the occasional younger student due to my family asking for my assistance.
Please understand that for many teachers, especially in school, English is very subjective. Part of learning how to write well is also knowing your audience, and more specifically, the person who grades your papers. For an English tutor, these are very important things to be told, as it will help us work towards not only a better paper and understanding of the English language, but also, hopefully, a better grade on your paper.
Recently, my highschool sweetheart and I got engaged after five years of dating. It was a wonderful rush of emotions and for us, it was clear that the time was right to become bound to eachother. We currently live with our two cats, a tubby calico and a lanky black bombay, and every waking day is a moment I am fond of right now.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Think about why you came to a tutor, desptie the obvious "I needed English help." What about English or your essay needs improvement. Is it as simple as writers block? Do you need to learn to elevate your diction? Do you struggle with writings relating to a main topic or staying with your thesis? Any questions that can help pinpoint what exactly you need will be extremely beneficial. On the other hand, it is also okay if you need general help, but try to understand how broad English is. Try to have a few select areas of improvement in mind.

He is very thorough and kind
Super helpful and extremely thorough in his review of essays, and all around a great tutor for English. Helped me immensely and I'm sure he will help you greatly as well!
He was able to edit my writing in a way that kept my main idea highlighted but overall bettered the diction and syntax of the piece. The final product was better than I could have hoped for and provided a wonderfully written essay with lots of good communication back and forth.

Details
For most of my sessions through Tutor.com, I will be charging about $20 a session. This is mainly due to the fact that Tutor.com charges tutors for connecting to students, so I am charging very little to just make a small profit to begin with. If the sessions planned have a lot of involvement, such as an entire courseload, reading a book, or engaging in some other form of deep immersion, additional costs will be discussed, but always before hiring.
