About Sammy
As a senior at Yale University majoring in Psychology and Education, an avid performer, and an individual with experience in youth engagement (specifically related to literature and theatre arts), my tutoring sessions are deeply collaborative, engaging, and creative. Especially when it comes to college essays, I strive to combine rigorous, academically appropriate rhetoric while ensuring that the student's personal voice and writing style is brought out. I will tutor students not just in how to write a good essay but how to tell a good story. I am not here to "churn out cookie-cutter essays," but to work with students one-on-one to develop a unique, compelling, and authentic personal statement.
I am deeply passionate about working with students to cultivate an articulate, compelling, creative, and authentic voice in their writing.
Beyond my freelance work, I have been tutoring students in the college application process and SAT with AlphaPrep, a premier tutoring service located in Bridgeport, CT for the past year. Before that, I was a teaching fellow with "Breakthrough Collaborative," a national summer academic enrichment program that provides intellectual and creative engagement to underserved students across America. I taught literature and theater to students entering high school, and mentored a number of students through the entirety of the summer. At Yale, I'm a member of the Education Studies program, a select group of students who study, research, and practice teaching.

Before we begin our sessions together, I speak with the student (and the student's parents, if applicable) to figure out:
1. What does the student hope to 'get out' of the tutoring process? What are some of the student's goals?
2. What are some "growth areas" that the student wants to work on during our time together?
3. What are the teaching methods that works best for the student? What are some teaching methods that definitely don't work well with the student?
4. Any initial questions they have for me?
And then our time can begin!
I have worked with students from around the country and the world (mostly remotely). For the SAT, I have worked with students who bring a diversity of skills and growth areas with them. Some of my students have a natural intuition for reading comprehension, while others need lots of help on math fundamentals. I have also worked with students with ADD; I myself have ADHD, and find I am able to relate to some of my students through it.

I strive to adjust my pricing system as much as possible to the needs of the students and families that I work with, as I believe tutoring should be as accessible. I will usually propose a quote and then adjust accordingly (down to a set minimum) based on conversations I have with the student/their family.
