About Laura
I'm currently an instructional designer creating engaging digital learning content and games. I miss working directly with students, so I've decided to start tutoring part-time.
Education:
I have an M.Ed in Technology, Innovation, and Education program from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
Teaching/Tutoring Experience: 5 years
I taught 4th and 5th grade English in DC, and have a background tutoring both writing at the college level and the SAT. I first got into tutoring after I received a perfect score on the Reading portion of the SAT.
I enjoy helping students make progress, feel proud of their accomplishments, and achieve better outcomes.
In my primary position, I'm able to design digital resources, products, and games that help a wide variety of students engage in digital learning.
However, I also love working 1-1 with students because it is incredibly rewarding to watch someone learn and grow and know that I helped them get there!
I started tutoring the SAT right out of highschool. I was my highschool valedictorian, and I got a perfect score on the Reading portion of the SAT. Going into college, I spent 3 years tutoring college level expository writing. I loved working directly with people and helping them improve. After getting my BA in English, I continued tutoring the SAT, moved down to DC, and began teaching 4th and 5th grade English as a classroom teacher.
I've always been interested in how people learn, how we assess our learning, and how we can learn through technology, so I spent a year working on the National Assessment of Educational Progress and then moved to Cambridge to get my Master's from Harvard in Technology, Innovation, ivand Education.
I'm now primarily an instructional designer. It's literally my job to think about the most effective, efficient, and engaging ways to learn online, in blended classrooms, and in person. I love having a broader impact on the way resources are designed and created! But, I also still love working with students 1-1, helping them improve, and watching them make progress. Once a teacher, always a teacher!
I have a Master's in Education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
I also have about 5 years of teaching and tutoring in various settings: online, in person 1-1, and as a classroom teacher.

Our first session, I will meet with the student to figure out what they need help in, how I can best contribute, and what our plan will be moving forward. I will also give an overview of what types of skills and concepts I generally recommend to strengthen performance in the area of student need and walk students through the flow of a typical lesson.
Once we have a plan, I will work on my own to develop a curriculum/ outline our first several lessons. That independent work is included in the price of the first session.
From there, each time we meet we will go through a new lesson. The structure of a lesson generally involves reviewing our learning/assigned work from previous sessions, progress updates, direct instruction in a new concept/skill, practice of the new concept/skill, review of the work produced in practice (this is where I'm able to see any misconceptions and walk through various approaches), and assignment of further practice.
I will adjust each session for the next week based on that student's individual progress/areas to grow and the feedback given to me during the sessions.
I've worked with students from 4th grade up through college, and I currently design educational products for students as young as kindergarten.
I would say that the most important thing is to find someone who will adjust the curriculum based on your progress and needs. Many online tutors have a set curriculum. Session 1 they teach X, session 2 they teach y, etc. However, a lot of the pedagogical value of 1-1 tutoring is in finding someone who knows enough to design a curriculum based on what you need, will listen and respond to the feedback you give in a session, and will adjust the path forward based on their experiences with you. Tutors are there to support you, not just walk you through content. Make sure that you find someone that is willing to put in that extra work between sessions to personalize your experience.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I would encourage students to come to me directly with any questions relating to their needs. Im here to help! However, I've found that it's often very difficult to figure out why we don't understand something on our own.
Because of that, once I know the general area you need help in, I want to get you working on something as soon as possible. Seeing your work helps me figure out what you need more than anything else.
I believe strongly that the student should be working harder during the session than I am. I'm not going to lecture for an hour about parts of speech. Direct instruction is important, but it should be delivered efficiently and put in practice immediately, so that I can see what the student understands/isn't getting, provide personalized feedback, refine subsequent practice, and adjust my approach moving forward.
