About Baleigh

All my life I've been delighted by history and literature, and I love to share my passion with others. I'm a college graduate with a BA in History and English, and I minored in Women's and Gender Studies. I specialized in medieval and 20th century history and literature with a focus on women and marginalized groups. I love to read and write, and I've published both fiction and non-fiction writing. I can help with journalism assignments, as well, and I'm experienced with the Adobe Suite.

It was an accident, really. My friends have always come to me for help with school. I'm not sure why, but academic has come easily to me at every level, and my ease has led me to tackle many subjects. My first tutoring position came in high school, and I realized how much fun it could be to help others with school work. I considered studying to become a teacher in college, and I still might get my teaching certification, but throughout my college years, I was mostly focused on research. That being said, my love for disseminating knowledge has not wavered.

I tutored fellow and younger students all through high school and college. My degree from Saint Louis University is in history and women's and gender studies with a minor in English and I often helped my peers in our advanced and honors courses. At SLU, we receive an exemplary education in the liberal arts and our core program is extensive, so outside of my chosen fields, I'm also comfortable tutoring in theology, philosophy, and psychology. I can also teach entry-level/beginner's Spanish and German since I studied both languages for at least three years each.

I was the editor-in-chief of my high school newspaper and wrote for the SLU paper, so I'm well-versed in journalism, including the use of newspaper editing/layout software like InDesign, Photoshop, etc. I'm also an expert with the Microsoft Suite and the equivalent Google Drive applications.

Additionally, I was a babysitter for five years and I volunteered over 600 hours as a camp counselor over the course of two summers, so I'm used to working with kids.

Every student is different, and there are many unique ways to approach the teaching process. I like to gauge a student's comfort with the material, and then work from there to create a tailored program for that student. For instance, if they need help with reading then I will ask them to read to me from a book that they really enjoy. I've found that if you implement materials that the student already enjoys, they're far more likely to be engaged in the session. If your student needs help with their history class, we might first try to dive into what aspects of the course interest them the most-- be it the military history, the social history, even the fashion history. There are a lot of wonderful ways to make the subjects that I specialize in intriguing to young students.

I've mostly tutored high school and college-aged students, but my babysitting and camp counseling positions both allowed me to teach younger students, just not in an official setting. I'm also used to working with non-traditional students, and I'm trained to handle and diffuse many types of situations that could arise when working with a student.

You should really look for a tutor that is willing to work within your interests. I've known plenty of tutors who try to force students to work with really difficult material-- like Victorian gothic literature-- when that's an unrealistic starting point for many young students. A tutor should be a good communicator, unpretentious, and ready to adapt to any child's needs.
