About Steven
I have taught high school students for more than 40 years and college students for more than 25 years as an adjunct college professor at College of DuPage, Benedictine University, and Elmhurst College. I am currently an adjunct professor teaching writing at Harper College. I created the English portion of the ACT test prep at Lake Park High School 25 years ago. Though now retired from full time teaching, I still teach the SAT prep at that high school each winter and spring. I was nominated for the Spirit of Excellence Award for Teachers at Lake Park H.S. in both 2010 and 2011 before my full time retirement from there in 2011.
I taught at St. Patrick H.S. for boys from 1975-1978. I taught full time at Lake Park H.S. in Roselle from 1978-2011. I currently teach 1-3 courses per semester as an English Adjunct Professor at Harper College. I also teach the English SAT prep class at Lake Park H.S. on Saturday mornings from January until March.

Usually, in my first meeting, I interview the student to find out what his/her scores currently are and what he/she seeks as a best score scenario. I also talk about what colleges he/she is applying to and about how realistic it is for the student to get a high enough score to receive admission to those colleges. I do my tutoring at the student's house and, for safety reasons, require one of the parents be present during all sessions. I usually talk with the parents as well about colleges and scholarship opportunities.
I have worked with students across the spectrum including students with special needs as well as AP and honors students.
You want to hire someone with experience as well as knowledge. I have 25 years of experience in test prep. In addition to my undergraduate degree and masters degree in English, I also have an undergraduate degree in psychology with an emphasis in cognitive learning and tests and measurements.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
The biggest questions should be what major you want to pursue in college and what kind of college you wish to go to. I usually have students go through a checklist:
Do you want a public or a private college?
How close to home do you want to be?
How big of a school do you feel comfortable with?
All of these things then need to be factored in to how high a test score the student can achieve.
