About Shania

I really enjoy sharing my knowledge and helping students academically. I also find it important to encourage students, so they know regardless of the difficulty of the subject matter they can do it! I acknowledge that each student is different and therefore learns differently, so I do my best to adapt my tutoring strategies to fit the needs of the individual.

I have been tutoring since I graduated high school and I am currently enrolled at Lafayette College. In the past I have tutored elementary and middle school aged students in various topics in math and English. In addition, I have taken a variety of math courses in my high school and college career, as well as multiple AP English courses. I have also taken AP Biology in high school and I am currently a Biology major. I have wide range of experience with various courses of varying difficulties and I would love to help others succeed. I really enjoy when students take an interest in a subject matter, and when they feel accomplished and proud after tackling a difficuly concept.

I started tutoring the summer after I graduated high school, and I tutor for a relatively new business based in my home town (Empowering Kids Organization). At the end of my first summer there, I was asked to return and I genuinely enjoyed the experience and came back to tutor the following summer. It was at this job that I realized that I love tutoring because it makes me feel as though I am making a positive impact in someone's life.

I graduated Magna cum laude from my high school. By time I graduated high school I had taken 7 AP courses (Biology, Chemistry, United States History, English Language and Composition, English Literature and Composition, Psychology, Spanish Language and Culture). Finally, I attend Lafayette College and study Biology. I have also tutored in the past after graduating high school in my home town.

First, I like to get to know the student (including: what help they think they need, their goals, their hobbies, interests, etc.). I find that when I can make a connection between what they are studying and something they are interested in, it makes it easier for the student to be more engaged with the material. Next, I try and come up with a strategy for teaching and/or reviewing material that I think will work best with how the student learns (this part is constantly changing and adapting depending on how well one strategy resonates with the student). Finally, I like to encourage and remind my students (especially new ones) that regardless of how difficult the material is, they can understand it- it may just require a different approach.

I have worked with elementary school students as well as middle school students.

Look for someone who is knowleagable in the field that you are looking for, but also someone who's style of teaching or tutoring is compatible with your learning style. Oftentimes, it is easy to feel discouraged and to feel as though you can't understand something, but it is far more likely that you just need the information presented to you in a different way. So, while it is also super important to have a tutor who knows what they are talking about, I think it is also really important to look for a tutor who is willing to put in the effort to see you succeed.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should think about what they want the outcome of their conversation with their teacher to be. For example, if a student is struggling in a class and wants to talk with their teacher about getting extra help, they should think about what type of help would be most beneficial to them (whether that be supplemental videos, extra practice, just going over the lesson again, etc.). At the same time, it is perfectly reasonable for a student to not completely understand what would help them learn better snd not knowing all of that information should not discourage them from asking for help.
