About Stephanie
I have been tutoring reading and writing, from 3rd grade through college level, for 6 years. I studied English in college, so I bring experience and enthusiasm to what I do, and with my friendly personality, I will make learning fun and also personalized to what you need. For the last two years, I worked with the Schuler Scholar Program in Chicago, a college access non-profit in which I led one-on-one sessions of reading enrichment and reading/writing tutoring with high school students. During this time, I was trained in and practiced the skills of evaluating where students are at and personalizing my tutoring and enrichment to what they need, whether that was support with work in their classes or challenging them outside their classwork. My reading enrichment involved supplementing reading a novel or poetry with creative writing and artistic interpretations of the text. Throughout college, I worked at the Writing Center, in which I helped my peers with all parts of the writing process - brainstorming an idea from the prompt, methods for beginning to write, organizing the essay, editing, etc. Two summers ago, I tutored a 3rd grader in writing, and one of our sessions involved writing letters to each other and ended in us making the letters into paper airplanes which we "sent" to each other.

It depends on whether I will be meeting with the student regularly or if the student is seeking help for one assignment. If it is just one assignment, like an essay, I would probably just dive right in working on the assignment, asking the student what they need help with and having them describe the assignment. If I will be working with the student regularly, I would spend the first session getting to know them - hobbies, likes, dislikes, life goals.
Two summers ago, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra played the score of Star Wars Episode IV while the movie was screening. It was awesome.
