About Victoria

Classes are moving online because of Coronavirus. Some professors are asking students to write a lot more to replace in-class work. Many students will struggle with this. We signed up for in-person classes for a reason. No one signed up for this and I'd hate to see students having to delay graduation because of it. I can make sure you pass.

I've worked as a certified English tutor at UMass Dartmouth's Writing and Reading Center for three years. I've had extensive training through my work there, so I can help with writing in any discipline. I've been trained for anything you're concerned about - grammar, sentence structure, choosing topics, structuring information, format/citations. If you want, I can explain in detail why I am suggesting certain changes so that you can improve your writing skills in general.

I'm set to graduate in May with a dual degree in Biology and Philosophy, so I can also provide help with understanding the content in any classes that are related to these disciplines.

I like to see students realize that they are capable. I like to see the techniques I teach make a difference, so that students grow to no longer need my help and are able to talk themselves through the steps on their own.

I applied to work at my school's tutoring center in my sophomore year.  I was selected through an evaluation of a writing sample and an interview process.

Three years of experience with online and in-person tutoring at both the graduate and the undergraduate level.  Regular training workshops about tutoring techniques and issues.  Regular observations of other tutors.

Four years of study at the Bachelor's degree level in Biology and Philosophy, as well as a broad range of general studies across many disciplines like English, Sociology, Psychology.

This depends on the learning style/personality of the student.  I don't take a one-size-fits-all approach.  Students come to tutors with different strengths/weaknesses.

In general, I try to assess where you are in the writing process. We can jump in at any of the following steps:

Step 1: Brainstorming.

If you're completely stuck and don't know what to write, we can analyze the prompt and discuss how to approach it through Discord/Skype (either through a video/voice call or messages, whatever you are comfortable with). This is the most important part of writing.

Step 2: Outlining.

Personally, I outline every paper/discussion board before I write it. You want to have a general idea of how your ideas will be ordered before you start.  Some people are able to build and keep track of this in their heads, so they skip this step and still get good results.  (If this is your writing style and it works, don't force yourself to fit other people's mold!!!)  However, if you don't know how to start or have been told that your writing is disorganized, I recommend trying this. I can also walk you through it through Skype/Discord if that will help.

Step 3: Writing.

Most students who come to me have already attempted to write a first draft of their paper.

In this case, you can email me the paper.  This allows me to read it over and determine if there are any issues I think should be addressed.  If you want me to focus on a specific issue (ex: grammar) you can mention this in the email.  I will reply to your email within 48 hours.  I will send you a document of your paper with comments or corrections that are marked with track-changes.  This way you can see what I've recommended that you change and why.  I'll send a separate document which is the paper with those changes applied.

If you want more detailed explanations about any recurring grammar/structural mistakes I've identified in your paper, we can discuss them through video chat or messaging.

College-level students from across all disciplines; both graduate and undergraduate students.  I've also worked with a few professors.

I'm not able to write the entire paper for you, but I can give you guidance and feedback.

If you feel like you aren't a good writer, it's probably not your fault.  English is generally a mess and the American school system can fail its students.  You can improve with through practice and learning techniques.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Any kinds of questions are welcome at any stage of the process.

I generally hope that students have read the prompt and thought about how they might approach it.  Ask yourself if there is anything you don't understand about what the instructions are asking you to do.

Try to brainstorm and get an idea of how you'd like to structure the paper.  Try to gather your ideas.  Pay attention to any parts of the prompt you're not sure how to answer.
