About Erin

I'm a licensed educator and recent graduate of the University of Vermont, majoring in Secondary Education with a concentration in Social Studies and a minor in Education for Cultural and Linguistic Diversity. I am an enthusiastic tutor; I absolutely love working with students and I prefer planning engaging, fun lessons that make learning enjoyable and interactive. My style of tutoring also follows the Understanding By Design method; designing each learning experience with my students' learning and skill development specifically targeted for maximum achievement and understanding. I have worked with ages 11-18, and I currently work at South Burlington High School as a Social Studies teacher.

I enjoy tutoring and working with students immensely. I knew I wanted to be a teacher since I was very young because I myself had a series of wonderful teachers that approached learning as a partnership and adventure. Learning should be fun, personalized, and accessible to everyone and I truly enjoy creating that experience with my students.

I knew I wanted to be a teacher since I was very young; I had some wonderful teachers and genuinely loved school. I started helping my young nephew with his own studies when I was fairly young myself and started to get more serious about being a teacher as I got older. Volunteering as an education tutor for a "farm to table" education program in my local school district solidified my determination to become a teacher. Training to become a teacher in college was an incredibly rewarding experience and I look forward to continuously honing my practice.

The training I have that is related to my work stems from my degree I achieved at the University of Vermont. I have a B.S. in Secondary Education, with a concentration in Social Studies and a minor in Education for Cultural and Linguistic Diversity. When gaining this degree, I also gained three years of teaching experience in various settings including one-on-one tutoring, group learning, and whole-class sessions which included a month of solo-teaching American history to 11th and 12th graders. I have also gained experience as a teacher in public schools and summer programs, working with ages 11-18.

My typical process for working with a new student starts with a "getting to know you" session. Specifically, I identify the student's learning goals, their typical learning challenges, and favored methods of learning new material. Once these are identified, the student and I will start to plan how their future learning experiences will look and go from there.

I have worked with a wide variety of students; ranging from elementary and secondary students to adult learners. I have also worked with English language learners as well as students with special education needs.

I would advise that student to look for a teacher who is willing to take the time to understand how that student learns and what will make learning genuinely enjoyable for them. This material can be dry, and personal investment is often needed to make the learning meaningful, memorable, and useful.

A recent event I was fond of was when I played a learning game with my 10th grade students about Greek mythology during my student-teaching. The animation and excitement created by this game in the classroom was such a wonderful sight to see. It made me proud to know that I contributed to making this learning environment one of comfort and openness so students with a wide range of abilities could actually enjoy learning interesting material in such a fun way.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I would advise students to truly think of how they like to learn. Do they enjoy listening or watching a teacher demonstrate what they are learning? Or are they more a hands-on learner that would rather try and tackle the material as they go?

I would also advise students to think of how they can better thrive when learning. How do they get personally invested in the learning material? What makes learning fun and interesting enough that it will stick for them?
