About Mara

Students feel more connected to their learning because they see more clearly how the language works, and then they can edit their own work.

I have been tutoring writing, reading, grammar, listening and speaking in private sessions, adult classes, and conversation groups since 2000. I love to see students finally understand something they had not understood before, and to put their feelings and insights into words.

I have a Masters degree in Reading/Literacy from Bank Street College of Education, as well as a Certificate in TESOL from The New School.

I like to find out what students see as their purposes in getting lessons, what their general interests are, and what they feel are their strengths and their areas where they want to improve. Then I can base our work together on these things.

If they are writing an essay assigned by a professor, I try to make sure they understand the prompt. We have a lot of discusssion of their opinions on the subject.  Often, I have them make a "map" or "web" to organize their thoughts.  The more they write on this organizer, the easier it will be to write the essay. For some essays, we work on the main thing they want to say before developing a thesis statement and topic sentence. The student thinks of points that support the thesis statement.  The logic and the phrasing are worked on after this, and the grammar, spelling, and mechanics come last.

For ESOl, it depends greatly on the level. At low levels there will be many different activities in the same session.

With intermediate levels students, I like to use a lot of role play.

When working with advanced students, I use a text that interests them, perhaps a novel or short story, and base the writing work on that text. I also like to keep a written conversation going with them
