About Emmie
I graduated Harvard University with an honors English degree in 2018 as summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. My senior thesis won the Hoopes Award. I won the Sheldon Fellowship which allowed me to travel for a year and conduct research for my writing projects. I am currently a graduate MFA student at the Michener Center for Writers in Austin TX but, as my classes are now online, I have relocated to NYC this fall to be closer to friends and family. I’ve been tutoring students in English, writing, math, and ACT/SAT for eight years. At Harvard, I was the fiction editor of the literary magazine, The Harvard Advocate, and worked with college freshmen and sophomores on their close reading and analytical essay writing skills. I also taught an advanced College Writing course for the summer session at the preparatory academy, Northfield Mount Hermon. I tutored fourth grade for the Mission Hill After School program for three years, and taught kindergarten at Bridge Boston Charter. I’m living in Midtown.
I’ve always been passionate about education and teaching. My dad has been a teacher for over thirty years and I grew up around educators as my adult role models. I especially love working with students one on one so I can give specific and specialized attention, which is one of the reasons why I now gravitate towards tutoring.
I went to Milton Academy, graduated cum laude, and won the English department awards for best critical essay and best creative writing. Then I attended Harvard University and graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, with an honors degree in English. I’ve been immersed in the English world for years and am so passionate about literature and language. I’ve been an editor of a literary magazine and worked during the summers and school year as both a tutor and teacher of fourth grade, seventh grade and eleventh grade.

I try my best to tailor my feedback and attention to suit the individual student’s needs. Especially with feedback that relates to writing, students require and appreciate assistance in different ways. Some like to talk through ideas during the brainstorm process; others need help with organization or thesis statements; some want another set of eyes to go over grammar, spelling and sentence structure. I can adapt to help out a student in whatever area is most appreciated. I especially love talking about literature and working with students to identify the underlying themes of a text. I also like to help students find the best pieces of evidence to back up their arguments. But again, all of these areas still fall under the category of essay writing. I can assist with ESL training as well, and more general support that is needed with English and literature courses, particularly college essays.
This is a bit off the beaten path, but I’ve spent the year after college teaching scuba diving as a PADI scuba instructor in Thailand. I know it’s different from teaching English, but it's similar to tutoring in the ways it requires a deep intuitive sense and extreme attentiveness to and individual students. I am very sensitive to the needs of my students in all settings. I am warm, approachable. I keep things fun while still being efficient. And I’ve always loved teaching!
