About NORMAN
Successful tutoring requires knowledge of the subject plus the ability to share that knowledge with the student. The first ingredient is the easiest of the two. I hold a PhD in electrical engineering plus over fifty years of professional experience including Bell Labs and Philips Research.
I've taught at Fairfield University in Connecticut and in classes held at work but my favorite experiences have come from tutoring students 1-on-1. It's an opportunity to establish friendships and watch my new friends grow, overcome obstacles and achieve.
The secret is to not to "make" the student understand but to "let" the student understand. The tutor has to learn what to explain to the student and then step back to let the student solve problems. I like to break down problem solving into simple steps and I like to teach exam-taking skills. Above all, I approach my students with respect and confidence. I form a partnership with my students and celebrate their successes.

First of all get to know each other by answering the student's questions and asking about the student's background and goals. Set some ground rules about how the student learns and the student's expectations. E.g., Help with homework, reinforcing the classroom lessons, etc.
Next get started with the first lesson to learn the realities of how to teach the student.
