About David

I have always loved learning about math and the sciences! Working with others interested in learning has always been a passion of mine - I have tutored others personally and professionally since my own high school days.

As a Professional Engineer licensed in multiple states, I work with math and physics daily.

I started tutoring math and French in high school, and enjoyed it.  I tutored in person through high school, college, and off and on during my professional career.  I have always enjoyed teaching, but as most know, private industry pays better...

I have a bachelor's in Civil Engineering and post-graduate work in Mechanical Engineering (vibrations analysis).  For licensing requirements, we are required to take a minimum of 15 hours/year of continuing development classes.  My most recent ones consisted of fatigue in welded joints and structural stability.  I also have 25+ years of industry experience.

I find that the student/teacher chemistry is the most important thing to ensure effective learning.  If everything clicks as it should, we'll begin with going over current and previous student work and their teacher's expectations.  Then we would roll into specific questions that the student has.  After that, I would put together a short-term plan to help them on their way.

I have tutored math to students from 6th to 12th grades, physics from 11th grade to college sophomores, and statics to college sophomores.

Obviously, you want to make sure that the teacher has the knowledge of the particular subject you need help in with tools that you find interesting and useful.  However, ask yourself early on if you think you have a good rapport with the teacher.  I have found this to be one of the best indicators of effective learning.

One thing I enjoy is giving engineering presentations to middle and high school classes.  Recently, a colleague and I presented at a nearby high school and it was very well received.  There were more questions about engineering careers than we had ever heard from another group.  It felt good to know that there are kids out there so interested in the technical fields.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
They should drill down on what their specific needs are.  Sending a homework page with the comment, "I don't understand this" doesn't help.  What parts don't you understand?  Are there questions you are answering correctly and others you aren't?  Try and be as specific as possible - this will help the teacher zero in on the issue and help you effectively.
