Matt taught both of my boys in weekly lessons for about 10 years each. He was not only their drum instructor but became a mentor and friend as they aged. They are still connected with him today, although both away at college now. Through the years, Matt met them where they were in their skill development and passion, tailoring lessons as they explored their musicianship. He knew when to push their learning, when to give them some space, and when to pass them along to other instructors in his network when they needed extra training out of his teaching scope. One of my sons is graduating from the Berklee College of Music this year and although there were several music instructors who influenced his skills and abilities, Matt had the most profound impact on his joy in playing and performing and guided him on his path to a professional music career. I can’t say enough about Matt’s ability to connect with a student, to offer them a safe space to become who they are, and teach them about music along the way. I’m so grateful for his role in the lives of my children.
