Lydia Rubio was my drawing and basic painting teacher at Parsons in the early 80’s of New York City. I was immediately drawn by the title of the course “Visual Thinking”, those were my first experiments in painting. She was the best teacher of the year. I understood that lines could be paintings. I am forever grateful to Lydia for confirming that my mind was that of a visual thinker.

I had the pleasure of Lydia’s teachings, guidance, and mentorship over the span of nine months. During these months we would have weekly, ninety-minute meetings, to discuss that week’s progress. With Lydia’s guidance, I developed a series of gouache paintings on paper. Through our discussions, I gained invaluable insight on where to take my art. When I first started working with Lydia, I lacked direction. I was stuck. Overwhelmed by the staggering number of possibilities, Lydia helped me hone in on what I truly wanted to be producing. With direction from Lydia, I began to further develop my own unique style. Our weekly meetings allowed me to explore different techniques while establishing a tempo for creating work. Each week we would critique that week’s paintings. By comparing paintings throughout the weeks, we pinpointed key techniques to focus on, and eliminated some of the less successful studies. This process and progression with Lydia has been immensely helpful in figuring out where I desire to take my work.
