About Boris
Hello! I am here to introduce or guide you through a fulfilling journey in which you will learn about art, the world and yourself. First, I'm not here to teach you how to make cookie-cutter/cute/traditional paintings or "how to draw a horse" step-by step. This isn't your regular high-school art class. I'll teach you how to make "real" art that is personal, meaningful and contemporary. Second, I believe everyone possesses the capability to make meaningful artwork. Third, art is an activity that helps people exercise their creativity and imagination and this is what I focus on.
I have worked in all mediums and experimented in different styles from classic realistic portrait drawing to contemporarty abstract painting. I am knowledgeable in the subject, patient, and able to break down concepts and techniques into simple clear parts. I love introducing people to the vast possibilities of art, as well as working with advanced students on furthering their skills.
What is unique about my lessons is I focus more on teaching you the conceptual side of art; the theory and strategies of creating and self-expression. I help students discover or improve their unique visual language in order to make art that is meaningful and personal and not just "looks pretty," but has content! I am also able to introduce you to many wonderful contemporary artists that may influence you.

I started teaching because I am passionate about art and believe it is an exciting and interesting hobby for people to learn. I love introducing people to the vast possibilities of art and showing them their creative side.
MFA in Painting and Drawing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (rated one of the best graduate programs for painting in the US). Work with me and you won't have to go there and pay their tuition but i'll teach you everything I know:). I studied all disciplines and worked in multiple styles and mediums with accomplished artists and teachers. I started teaching my own group art lessons in 2017 and for Lillstreet Art Center in 2018 but recently decided to focus on more serious or college level teaching.
Ostrerov has exhibited his work in Chicago and New York including showing at Paris London Hong Kong (PLHK), Lubov, Tory Folliard, and the Portrait Society in Milwaukee. He has been featured in several publications including New American Paintings #119.

In the first lesson we talk about your experience, motivation and goals. I get a sense of where my student is at, if we are a good fit, and then we get to learning! In each class we have a central topic to focus on. Though I can help you with technical and material issues, I focus on the theory and strategies of creating and self-expression. I help students discover or improve their unique visual language in order to make art that is meaningful and which they can call their own.
I have mostly worked with begginer adults. My ideal student is anyone who is curious and willing to put in effort to learning to make art.
Find a teacher who is accomplished and/or know what they are talking about. This is very hard to do but you might get a sense only by interviewing them. Are they an active reputable member of the contemporary art scene? Do they make unique work, or work that looks like it could be purchased at walmart? Do they understand contemporary art? Is their work written about or featured by respected publications/contemporary art blogs? I'll help you learn how to make work that communicates something not just sits back on the wall like cheap decoration.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What are your goals in art?
I don't teach a step-by step how to draw a horse type of lesson. I am here for people that were like me when I was younger: really curious about what art is, can be, what it means, and invested in becoming better at making art that expresses myself, communicates something, not just a pretty image.

Details
Watercolor and drawing lessons: $45/ 1st hr and $30/hr after that.
Oil painting lessons at my studio in Pilsen with all quality materials included are $100 for a 2 hour lesson, $130 for 3hrs.
Lessons can take place at your home or a different space, but there will be a small travel fee depending on distance from Pilsen.
