About Blake
I have an MFA in Painting from Indiana University, and currently teach as an adjunct at the university level. I have experience teaching university courses in Drawing, Painting, Color Theory, and 2D Design. I would be happy to share previous student work if you are interested. In addition to the basics of making images, I have a broad knowledge of the physical painting media, with significant experience using oil, acrylic, watercolor, gouache, and casein paints, as well as dyes, collage, and the historical practice of buon fresco. I regularly make my own paint in various media and in various forms. I am also adept in preparing surfaces to paint on, whether canvas, panel, or paper. Aside from technical skills, I have spent the last decade studying composition, color theory, and the general formal ingredients of painting. I teach at the college foundation level, but also regularly read and discuss contemporary theory, so I can happily and effectively work with anyone at any skill level. I can provide answers to any practical questions about the use of paint and how to get the most out of your materials; we can discuss the formal and/or conceptual concerns with your already developed art practice; or we can talk about anything in between. I can travel to students or they can come to my studio.
I love working with people who are learning the language and ingredients of painting, and I love introducing them to that vast world of possibilites. Learning to see like an artist truly changes the way that we see the world around us and navigate it, and can be a genuinely life-changing process. Whether students are interested in observation, abstraction, or anything in between, painting can be a massively liberating practice in a person's life, and introducing this possibility to people is a great joy. At higher levels, I really enjoy discussing the development of a student's art practice and what kind of meaning they want their work to hold.
I began teaching while I was in grad school at IU.
I have a BFA in Painting from The University of Southern Mississippi, and an MFA in Painting from Indiana University. I have taught university art and design for four years.

I like to see what students have made so far and discuss their interests. I want to know what direction students want to pursue, and we'll go from there. Whatever way each individual wants to work is exactly what I want them to pursue. I just want to help facilitate student's growth within that area.
I have mostly worked with college students, many of whom have been first generation college students in their families and/or exchange students.
Find a teacher who is making their own interesting work and who is engaged in contemporary art.
